What Hacker News says?

  1. Related to this, is there an easy way to run arbitrary programs in the macOS sandbox? AFAIK sandboxing is opt-in for app developers at the moment. Does manual invocation of sandbox-exec on the command line still work, and are there GUI helpers for running arbitrary apps with this tool? Edit: Apparently sandbox-exec is still usable, just not (publicly) well-documented. Would be nice of Apple to make sandboxing easier…

  3. The lack of documentation for that system is so frustrating! Security feature are the one thing where great documentation should be table stakes, otherwise we are left just wildly guessing how to keep our system secure! I'm also disheartened by how the man pages for some of the macOS sandboxing commands have declared them deprecated for at least the last five years: https://7402.org/blog/2020/macos-sandboxing-of-fol…

  5. I spent a lot of time last year looking for alternatives to iCloud for local syncing of calendar, notes, and contacts for macOS iOS. It's real easy to spend a lot of time banging your head against a wall trying to get things working. I learned to be suspicious of any posts that said things like "This should work!" instead of "Here are step by step instructions for what I actually did that worked for me under these c…

  9. I'm uncomfortable with having to create an account and be connected to a cloud service in order to have a working home voice assistant. To be fair, Mycroft does say that if you're willing to do some work, you can get local processing of speech recognition, but they don't seem they're very encouraging about that option. I made my own home voice assistant [0] that's pretty primitive, but runs entirely locally on a Ras…

  11. If you don't care about having user comments and you don't post all that often, you can do it all in handwritten HTML/CSS. Zero dependencies! (That's what I do with mine, at < https://7402.org >)
