  5. I don't buy the seemingly arbitrary distinction that 8 hours is a good night's sleep. I know people who require 9+ hours per night (ie they appear sleep deprived if they get less than 9 for a few consecutive nights). I know one person who requires about 4 per night (not a forced four where you end up looking 10 years older than you really are after a few years). I do like the idea of testing where your sweet spot is…

  7. Ugh, it hurts to read this kind of advice. Sue! Punitive damages! You can get costs! (btw, you probably can't get punitive damages, at least from the little info you've provided, and costs =/= attorney fees) The best advice in that thread was to seek out on-campus legal aid. At the law school I went to, there were clinics that dealt specifically with entrepreneurship and IP. Look around, I'm sure other schools run s…

  9. ISO is certainly not an unnecessary holdover from film cameras. It's actually very, very useful. To understand, you really need to get a grasp on the basics of exposure. This may be helpful: http://www.ajkesslerblog.com/understanding-exposure/ When a photon hits a pixel it produces an electrical signal. You can think of the ISO as the amount that signal is amplified. So, if you want to keep aperture and shutter spee…

  11. As I see it, people read books for two reasons: to gain some knowledge (consume info) or to be entertained. Maybe I'm missing something else? And I'm not at all announcing the death of books. I agree that some books mean more than just the words they contain. For this reason, I think they'll stick around as souvenirs of events, ideas, places, and people. But, many books don't represent more than the words they conta…

  13. The effects are test-independent. That was sort of the point of the study. You will certainly get better at the dual-n-back game, but the gains apply elsewhere, not just to game itself. It has much to do (they think) with the interconnectedness of fluid intelligence and working memory. I wrote about this fairly in depth here: http://www.ajkesslerblog.com/how-to-get-smarter/
