What Hacker News says?

  1. If anyone in city government is smart Chicago is going to have no real choice but to go against this trend because of its utterly atrocious parking meter deal 10+ years ago - or they're going to have to take that glut of spaces and make them free parking to try to get out of the deal. Basically the city committed to keeping a fixed number of street parking spaces for 75 years in exchange for a pittance. If spaces ar…

  3. > This isn't a unique problem, and we need a plan for healthy shrinking of cities and countries. I'll add as someone from the rust belt, while we do need to understand how to shrink cities, a lot of this shrinking in the central city was self-inflicted by sprawl. The metro populations of many of these rust belt cities stalled out in the 1950's-70's but for the most part has been relatively stable since then. Yes, we…

  5. He's a sociology professor at the University of Chicago, not some slack-jawed rube. Also, the point of the article is that success as gang rappers makes these boys targets for other gangs and their lives and options become limited, not that they're a danger to anyone outside of the gang territories. Chicago is a complicated city - the safe parts are among the safest of any American city, and the unsafe parts are so…

  7. The first hit for "grocery shops in detroit" is an article debunking the idea that there are no grocery shops in Detroit: http://www.urbanophile.com/2011/01/25/yes-there-are-grocery-... Of course, perhaps you live in Detroit, and have 2014-era information, in which case you would know more than me. I merely decided to search for this because I recalled reading years ago this guy who wrote a blog article about his fa…

I wrote the only utility in the world I'm aware of that will actually recover data out of corrupted tarballs, gzrecover: http://www.urbanophile.com/arenn/coding/gzrt/gzrt.html Along with other free software. Cheers!

  11. Anyone interested in this really should read Aaron Renn's blog The Urbanophile http://www.urbanophile.com/ - he wrote the New Geography article. He writes mainly on the Midwest but uses it as a lens to examine urban issues. He's one of the sharpest urban thinkers out there.
