There are already many, many monad tutorials. If you want something visual, perhaps this one? http://adit.io/posts/2013-04-17-functors,_applicatives,_and_...

  5. This happens to me all the time. I have a very popular illustrated post on Monads titled "Functors, Applicatives, and Monads in Pictures"[1]. When I wrote it I thought it was the best monad guide ever. Now, reading back, I can see that some parts are confusing. I still see a lot of people liking it, but three years later I wish some parts of it were better. [1] http://adit.io/posts/2013-04-17-functors,_applicatives,…

  7. A tad bit off topic, but for your functional language I'd recommend Haskell. It's given my mind the most trouble out of any of the other functional languages I've tried (which is a good thing). I find it's syntax reasonable, and resources plentiful. Excellent lecture series on functional programming (language used is Haskell): https://channel9.msdn.com/Series/C9-Lectures-Erik-Meijer-Fun... 9. It's not that bad. We just don't have the equivalent of GC for multi-threading yet, so the advice necessarily needs to be "just remember to take and release locks" (same as remembering to malloc and free). Hopefully someone will invent something like STM [1] in the distant year of 2007 or so [2]. It has actual thread-safe data structures. Not just the current choice between wrong-answer-if-you-dont-lock and insane-c…

  11. I've noticed the same thing. I wrote this post[1] a month ago. I put a lot of time into it and posted it on /r/haskell. I got some very insightful comments and good discussion. Two days ago it got posted to HN and the comments were very different. Lots of people saying "I don't understand this, this post sucks" but very few responded to me when I asked where they were stumbling so I could fix it[2]. The upshot to al…

  13. The Haskell introductory landscape has definitely changed. Learn You A Haskell for great good ( http://learnyouahaskell.com ) is an excellent introductory book to read to get started with Haskell. A drier but more in-depth read is http://book.realworldhaskell.org/ Also, when you hit monads again, the best advice I can give you to understanding them (99% of Haskell guides out there seem to be about monads) is to take…

Elm is also my gateway drug into functional. And Pragmatic Studio was a great start. Monads then seemed much easier to understand after Elm and reading this: http://adit.io/posts/2013-04-17-functors,_applicatives,_and_...

  25. Yeah that bit was alright, it was everything after that I struggled with ;) As an example; I don't know what a functor is. I've not come across that term in anything I've done before, so I click on it to read up and get the definition: "The Functor typeclass represents the mathematical functor: a mapping between categories in the context of category theory. In practice a functor represents a type that can be mapped…

  27. > You don't put semaphores around all data You're talking about putting semaphores around code . Locking data , not code , is a great way to do things. It composes and you don't run into too-many-locks, too-few-locks, forgetting-to-take-a-lock, or deadlocking problems. https://www.adit.io/posts/2013-05-15-Locks,-Actors,-And-STM-...
