You might find WAI's resources useful: https://www.w3.org/WAI/people-use-web/ And if you've come up with a cool idea for how to make something "more accessible", check whether Adrian Roselli wrote a "here's why you should never ever ever do this" article on the subject. https://adrianroselli.com/2024/11/avoid-read-only-controls.h... is funny and illustrates the point: > It’s weird to me that after I urged everyone n…

  5. The issue is if you do want the element to appear in the tree. If the element has semantic meaning it can mess things up. Adrian Roselli is an accessibility expert who has done extensive testing and written up his findings: https://adrianroselli.com/2022/07/its-mid-2022-and-browsers-...

  7. Although, as the article correctly points out, omitting the HTML tag is technically fine, there is one rather important argument for its inclusion: it can and should have a LANG attribute: <html lang=en-GB> It's not verbose after all, and IIUC may be omitted if and only if the document is served with corresponding information in `Content-Language:` HTTP header, but nasty (or rather annoying) things may happen if tha…

  17. They're not even good for keeping lawsuits at bay. https://adrianroselli.com/2020/06/accessibe-will-get-you-sue... The ADA lawsuit trolls who are quick to settle for money tend to go after smaller businesses presumably because they lack the resources to fight in court, to actually fix the problems, and because there are a lot more of them than large businesses.

  23. Yes, "alt" equivalent for "textual data representation" is ARIA role="img" with aria-label [0]: <span role="img" aria-label="[what assistive technologies should present]">[rendered content]</span> e.g. recommended for marking up obscure emoji [1]. Anyways, I see absolutely no reason why these projects (wavefont and linefont) build on top of plain ASCII (so the actual data sound as garbled nonsense) and not ligatures…

  25. Note that pure HTML and CSS implementations of tabs using <details> and <summary> fail to meet several important accessibility criteria [1]. While you can make something that visually appears to act as a set of tabs, building it accessibly unfortunately still requires JavaScript. 29. This has been tried and doesn't work, which doesn't mean it will never work in the future! There are a few companies offering solutions in this space, but they don't work, are often worse than the problems they're trying to solve and are a privacy disaster. The companies peddling them often engage in shady business practices, like falsely claiming that their overlays can protect you from ADA lawsuits[1], while actua…
