Why HN links it

HN readers cite this post as a guide to setting up log collection on Nomad, which one commenter says doesn't come out of the box. The commenter notes the post is somewhat dated.

What Hacker News says?

  1. > but nothing in micropayments That's not true. Web Monetization is built on top of the Interledger and does precisely that - micropayments for web content. When i wrote about it[0] and posted on HN[1] the overwhelming response here was negative, presupposing greed and lack of privacy of everyone ( as in the website would still track and run ads to earn more money, etc.). The solutions exist, people just don't want…

  9. What would be the point of using Nomad to orchestrate systemd units instead of just using Nomad to raw_exec stuff? Nomad does health checks and all that, so systemd isn't really needed. 11. Even on a public cloud, Vault is great for secrets and much better ( has more integrations and is more widely supported) than the cloud vendor's equivalents ( not to mention lock-in). Nomad is a great orchestrator, with lots of integrations ( e.g. it can just run JARs or firecracker microVMs). IMHO features wise it's better than AWS ECS ( the only cloud orchestrator bar Kubernetes I've used, can't talk about the oth…

  13. Multiple projects like OpenFaaS and Knative try to bridge that moat. And then there's also Nomad, which is drastically simpler than k8s. Not Heroku-easier, but closer to docker-compose than Kubernetes. Self-plugging my article on the Nomad vs Kubernetes subject: https://atodorov.me/2021/02/27/why-you-should-take-a-look-at...

  15. Web Monetization, Coil.com, Interledger are trying to solve that same problem [1] but honestly It's doubtful it will work. 1 - I've written about this here https://atodorov.me/2021/03/07/please-support-web-monetizati... and it was widely, if mostly negatively, discussed on HN https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26375857

Free in France. > But have you invested in 5Gbps+ networking gear to actually take advantage of the offer? 10 Gbps Nics have become super affordable (~20$) by the way. The 8/8 plan comes with a router that has WiFi 7 (theoretical max 46Gbps, but who knows in reality, it's not really out yet), an SFP+ port, and 4x2.5Gbps Ethernet ports. 17. An Intel Celeron N5105, on one core, does ~28Gbps locally between two bridged interfaces with iperf. A Raspberry Pi 4 has a single PCIe lane with a total of 4Gbps bandwith for everything (all USB ports and Ethernet). Edit: shameless plug, but I just finished writing an article on my new home network, including the router with the above spec/results: https://atodorov.me/2024/07/03/running-a-multi-gig-home-netw...

  19. Ut already exists in the form of the Web Monetization standard, which uses the Interledger network. Sadly it isn't very popular yet ( even if the Internet Archive, Imgur and Hacker Noon already support it). 20. Nomad all the way. It's much easier and lighter than Kubernetes, but it does 3/4 of what Kubernetes does. The ecosystem is much lighter but depending on your needs it could be entirely sufficient. I've written about Nomad vs k8s on my blog if that might interest you: https://atodorov.me/2021/02/27/why-you-should-take-a-look-at... Docker the company is struggling to survive after making wrong bets multiple times. The "enterprise" part, including Swarm, was sold off to Mirantis after years of neglect, and got some much needed investment and big fixes. Nonetheless, Docker…

I disagree - there's cloud PaaSes like Fargate or Cloud Run, or when self-managing, a third option which is much less known but quite easier while also being more flexible - HashiCorp Nomad. 23. Disclaimer: I work at HashiCorp, but have been of this opinion since before joining (source: https://atodorov.me/2021/02/27/why-you-should-take-a-look-at... ) HashiCorp Nomad is a perfectly easy and flexible orchestrator (not only containers, also VMs, random binaries, Firecracker, WASM, etc.) that is production grade. It has a number of advantages over Kubernetes (being drastically easier to deploy, use and maintai…

  24. If Docker Swarm is on the table (it's practically abandonware), I'd like to throw in Nomad by HashiCorp. It's also fairly lightweight, very flexible (can run various types of containers but also exec any executable), decent ecosystem (supports CNI and CSI). It can scale from single node control plane + workloads to tens of thousands of nodes, and the workers can also be geographically spread out (different regions/z…

  26. I can see the point you're trying to make, but you're choosing an interesting way of conveying it, and I disagree. Restic is a backup tool. Velero is a backup tool for Kubernetes. Vultr is a low cost but still decent "cloud" provider. GitOps is a philosophy which makes sense even on small projects. None of those are "wrong" or "overcomplicated" options. The elephant in the room is Kubernetes, which is indeed quite c…

It also doesn't help that Nomad handles everything from Docker containers to managing regular applications.
