What Hacker News says?

  1. Hamachi was amazing, one of the best, most focused apps I've ever used. We were kids but it was still easy to use. Then they were bought by LogMeIn and was killed unceremoniously. Also, it's old but not 90s old: https://swapped.cc/#!/hamachi released in 2004 actually.

I really like this page from the creator's personal website: https://swapped.cc/#!/personal-mark This "personal mark" seems to be encapsulated well in this kanban board. Bravo!

  11. Hamachi was created by Alex Pankratov. Once LogMeIn purchased Hamachi, they ruined it with the following update ( either purposefully or accidentally ) by making it no longer work with a large handful of older games. That sanfu in combination with a more bloated UI, forced LogMeIn account, and a splattering of useless features made it obsolete within a few months. It was the fastest rise and fall of a piece of softw…

  15. You don't actually seem to be using the logo anywhere, though. On your site you write that "I had (have) plans to write an Instant Messenger client with proper support for privacy. This was the logo concept for the project"[1], but this project does not actually seem to exist (at least not in any public manner). As such, why not just leave the logo of Tox in peace? Especially since it's a FOSS project with noble goa…

  23. You don't need to reinvent TCP. You can simply put TCP over UDP. Works like magic :) TCP hole punching works just fine in practice, but it's certainly a part of the "long tail" of empirical hacks that allow bumping NAT traversal rates into 95+% range. Detecting NATs that decrement ports is another. Ports that are incremented/decremented by more than 1 is yet another. And there's also UPnP that gives you another perc…

  25. Though not what it's designed for, halloc[1] Is similar to what you are talking about; if each function manually allocated its locals with halloc, and used the parent function as the parent allocator, then you would get an unbroken tree, and would free all the children upon returning from the function that had called setjmp(). 27. PS. Since we are showing things... I also ended up writing a screen-to-gif recorder to make the gifs for the Nullboard's readme. I always assumed this was a rather involved matter, but it was a surprisingly simple thing to do. Just GetDC() + BitBlt() in a loop + some nuances. It looks something like this - https://swapped.cc/tmp/giffer-screencap.gif The release "page" is over at - https://gist.github.com/apankrat/14…
