What Hacker News says?

  1. I just wrote a post[1] about using the user+alias@example.com instead of user@example.com. Basically treat your "regular" email address as a spam target, and use user+alias for all wanted communications. The +alias can be a random string, making it harder for spammers to guess. This works in gmail for both sending and receiving, although sending as you+alias@gmail.com requires messing around in the settings[2] and h…

  5. I love these kinds of tools! For part of my PhD research I made a bunch of digraph heatmaps of (differently-obfuscated variations of) stdlib binary files (raw byte sequences and asm mnemonics shown side-by-side): https://alexshroyer.com/misc/digraphs.mp4 There are often bright spots in these kinds of visuals that you end up seeing over and over again (e.g. clusters of ASCII).

  7. How meta can you go? I proposed a taxonomy here: https://alexshroyer.com/posts/2022-04-30-Fantasy-Fantasy-Foo...

  8. Coolest of all time is probably the touchscreen that you can use in an MRI[1]. But my current favorite is a low-impedance guitar pickup[2]. [1]: https://patents.google.com/patent/US10820839B2/en [2]: https://alexshroyer.com/posts/2023-01-01-Low-Impedance-Picku...

  9. Each level also has a logarithmically increasing number of "fantasy" meta games stacked on top, don't forget to take those into account: https://alexshroyer.com/posts/2022-04-30-Fantasy-Fantasy-Foo...

  10. Depends on your definition of "the real world". The hardest real world problems are out of reach (and always will be, because we'll keep moving the goalposts), but it's already capable of handling easy real world problems, and we have quite a lot of those. For example, it can answer homework problems and even help design lesson plans, but it can't design a lesson plan that resists ChatGPT-based cheating: https://ale…

  11. Cool, I also wanted to say that I think nbdev looks great, and while I think it and org-mode get similar results, the user experience is surely quite different compared to emacs. My org-mode workflows start with doom-emacs[1] because otherwise Emacs customization is too much of a time sink. I've written a couple peer-reviewed papers in org-mode (exporting to pdf), my blog is written org-mode (exported to html), and…
