What Hacker News says?

  1. I suspect those blog posts focused on photos. However, WebP works well for a much larger range of image types[0]. It has lossless options with better compression than PNG (because PNG is incredibly simple compared to more recent image formats, in my opinion in a kind of beautiful way). And when compressing graphically simple illustrations with lossy settings, it can get much better results than JPG, both compression…

  3. Way back in 2010, I developed an app called World Weather Watch for WebOS: http://forums.webosnation.com/webos-apps-games/231824-introd... It had animations and an "overview" screen that had times, temperatures, and forecasts. Here's a couple of screenshots: http://us.appitalism.com/app/palm-webos/244623-world-weather... 5. It's interesting to see a site like NPR handle a site deploy like this. I've seen blog owners start to consider switching to a static website, but news sites are definitely a bit more difficult to maintain like this. Personally, I use Jekyll on my own blog in a similar manner ( http://andrewmunsell.com/ ). < ShamelessPlug > I also wrote a tutorial ( http://www.andrewmunsell.com/tutorials/jekyll-by-example/ ) about u…

  7. I've actually started using this method, and it seems to work pretty well. It reduces file sizes significantly and yet the quality is fairly good. If you pay attention, you can see some quality loss/artifacts, though it's not bad. An example: http://www.andrewmunsell.com/blog/ Scroll down to the "Now is the Future" blog post. The cover image of the Seattle skyline is 1700x666 and ~65kb (though, it's been recompresse…

  9. I'd be curious to see why you're having issues setting up Dokku on Digital Ocean. They provide a one click image, so you should be able to just deploy the new instance, setup DNS (the two A records-- one of them is a wildcard), visit the instance's IP address and click Finish Setup, and then deploy your application. Have you tried doing a really simple sample app? It may take some coercing to get an existing Heroku…

  11. It really depends how you set it up, though-- for example, Digital Ocean provides their own image ( http://www.andrewmunsell.com/blog/dokku-tutorial-digital-oce... ) that provides a one-click deployment of Dokku, including all of the SSH key setup and stuff. Minimally, this makes it easier to start up a new Dokku instance on a new version and push your apps to the new instance before you destroy the old one. In my e…

  13. Actually, Google Glass already has this functionality. There's no real difference between the two, other than Google's implementation works where you're looking instead of requiring you to point your phone in a specific direction. I wrote about my experience with it during Google's Seattle Through Glass event: https://www.andrewmunsell.com/blog/looking-through-google-gl...

  17. > PowerMat's resonance charging supports multiple devices on one charging matt, whereas Qi uses inductive charging which require more precise placement to charge. Both PowerMat and Qi use inductive charging[0][1]. There are some technical differences, but the two are separated more by licensing and legal/political reasons than by actual underlying functionality and technology. 19. I did something similar with a Raspberry Pi and a string of WS2801 12mm diffused LEDs from Adafruit: http://www.andrewmunsell.com/blog/raspberry-pi-leds/ Because the LED string I used has an SPI-like protocol to control them, it can be done directly from the Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins without the need of an Arduino middle-man. Right now, it's implemented in Node.js as well (using the node-spi library), but I'm also wo…

  21. You can also do this with WWWizer if you do not host your DNS with Amazon. I go over this in a tutorial I wrote for Jekyll, but it applies to any static website generator (or any site at all, really.) http://andrewmunsell.com/tutorials/jekyll-by-example/

But, I do credit my website heavily for getting me where I am and I always highly recommend blogging and having an online portfolio to anyone trying to get into the tech industry. Fun fact: A long time ago I had a blog post/rant about reCAPTCHA end up on the HN home page…
