What Hacker News says?

  1. Anyone who is impressed by this should seriously check out Andrew Sullivan's view from your window contest. Most weeks a reader submits a photo from their window, literally anywhere in the world. And people track it down with very similar techniques, to the exact window. And a lot of the contest photos offer much less to go off of than this [namely, only 1 photo, low res, country/context unspecified]. Here is the wi…

  3. To lump a legitimate social insurance program like the Heritage Foundation's Romneycare (which many "conservatives" have taken to calling Obamacare) in with the excesses of civil forfeiture, PRISM, and the TSA is illegitimate. See, for refutation, Andrew Sullivan's "Since When Was Free-Loading A Conservative Value?" http://dish.andrewsullivan.com/2013/08/05/since-when-was-fre...

  5. I get a kick out of pinpointing the exact location of photos or paintings. A couple of communities exists for this: * Geoguessr (I don't participate in this one much, street view is pretty limiting) * The Dish's "View from My Window" archive. A now defunct blog series where readers would submit photos from their window. Very difficult. Users often pinpoint the exact window from which the photo was taken. http://dish…

  11. 87% of Americans are not descended from a recent Sub-Saharan African population (where recent is defined as within the last 80,000 years). African Americans form a genetically distinct American subpopulation with about 70-80% of genes from Africa. If you sent in spit samples to 23andMe from a white American and an African American, 23andMe would have no problem telling them apart. If race did not exist, this would n…

I used to hold similar views, but the opinion of this person, who worked with prostitutes, really opened my eyes to the problems and started to change my mind: http://dish.andrewsullivan.com/2012/02/22/dissent-of-the-day... From a economics stand-point, there's way higher demand than supply. And currently the only supply is another person. Most people won't willingly choose to be prostitutes when they have other opt…

Not to be that guy, but if "society" is defined as "humanity", as it should be imo when it comes to human health, all of us in first world are the 1%. Edit: "To make it into the richest 1 percent globally, all you need is an income of around $34,000, according to World Bank economist Branko Milanovic. 19. Using the reflections as additional information is very interesting. However, I’m not that surprised that views from windows can be relatively easily located. Andrew Sullivan has been running his View From Your Window contest for four years now and people have been guessing the locations of the photos with scary accuracy (as good as in the linked post). 21. Andrew Sullivan's blog The Dish[0] did this for its entire existence. It was a driving point of the site's culture, to the point where certain topics gained frequent contributors that were probably better recognized because of the advantageous signal-to-noise ratio. Many sites seem to be turning toward a manual moderation model now. This doesn't seem too whacky as a next step for many of them. [0] http://dish.andrew…

  25. I agree with Sullivan's take[1] posted yesterday. If this is the gay-rights movement today, a bunch of extremist Social Justice Warriors, I want no part of it. Not only that, but Catlin's reaction to it[2] is also shameful: 'oops, we thought he would evolve like President Obama did, our bad. but hey, we're putting our apps back on the marketplace!' 29. HN Journalist here, survivor of several 'digital first' revolutions and now, officially, a 'content director' and glad to have a very good job. A couple of things: 1. A really good newsroom is really tight. Very few print-trained journalists are in it for the money, so the cause and comradeship are everything. A quick way to ruin a newsroom is to implement sweeping changes that have nothing to do with good storytell…
