Why HN links it
HN readers link this blog in a discussion of Windows 8 on the desktop. The one comment refers to a post about a 'real' user's experience and cites it as the inspiration for the author's post.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 1 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
I will be expounding on everything under the Sun

I've been thinking about this issue for a while now. The term I like for what we are experiencing is "information obesity" (and I've written about it here: http://andrewoneverything.com/information-obesity )

HN discussionRelevant: http://andrewoneverything.com/post/43840346900/we-will-alway... I don’t think there will ever be a way to make a “big decision” with thorough analysis that will make you certain you made the right choice. There are too many variables to ever know for sure the “right” choice

HN discussionI see this as a dichotomy between people who are doers vs thinkers/creatives[1] If you are a thinker/creative and not a doer, you need to align yourself with a doer, in order to make great things happen. [1] http://andrewoneverything.com/its-the-music-stupid

HN discussionI have a term for this: "etime" [1] (the product of time and mental energy). Both are necessary to get anything done. [1] http://andrewoneverything.com/post/43544648479/i-dont-have-e...

HN discussion> You look like you're going to spend your life having one epiphany after another, always thinking you've finally figured out whats holding you back and how you can be productive and creative and finally turn your life around. But nothing will ever change. That cycle of mediocrity is'nt due to some obstacle. Its who you are. This is precisely what I've realized about people and famous cliches like "you can do anythin…

HN discussionI call the effect smartphones are having on us "Information Obesity" [1]. Just like when food was scarce and people ate as much as they could, and now that food is abundant many people can't limit themselves to sensible amounts, a similar thing happened with information. When information was scarce, we consumed as much as we could, and now that it is abundant many people can't limit themselves to sensible amounts, a…

HN discussionI wrote about this a while back, after watching a PBS documentary on domestic spying. Basically, it seems to me that the US could one day turn into a totalitarian regime with no way back [1]. Maybe it's overly-pessimistic, but once all the total-surveillance tools are in place, if the government ever turns totalitarian, it will be extremely difficult to overturn it [1] http://andrewoneverything.com/post/43837476217/…
