Too few sampled comments (9) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers cite Andy Davies's posts on browser page-load behaviour, the browser preloader, and Safari's cache partitioning, plus a Frida guide to decrypting TLS traffic. One commenter called the preloader post a pretty good explanation.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 9 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

It's a couple years old but this is a pretty good explanation of the preloader - http://andydavies.me/blog/2013/10/22/how-the-browser-pre-loa...

HN discussionEach origin has its own cache, so it doesn't matter if you load your fonts from the same place as some other site -- they won't be shared. https://andydavies.me/blog/2018/09/06/safari-caching-and-3rd... https://www.zdnet.com/article/chromes-new-cache-partitioning... https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/12/firefox-v85-will-imp...

HN discussionThis isn't effective as browsers partition the cache using a double (or triple) key of the document origin and third-part origin. Safari started this and Chrome is following - https://andydavies.me/blog/2018/09/06/safari-caching-and-3rd... So with a public JS CDN React would be still transferred multiple times. Using a custom bundle is probably more efficient as it should compress better resulting in lower download…

HN discussionOP here. Cross-domain caching is a myth[1] so reusing font files won’t work. In fact, it’s literally impossible in Safari[2] and soon to be made impossible in Chrome[3]. 1. https://csswizardry.com/2019/05/self-host-your-static-assets... 2. https://andydavies.me/blog/2018/09/06/safari-caching-and-3rd... 3. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=910708

HN discussionBased on https://andydavies.me/blog/2018/09/06/safari-caching-and-3rd... it seems highly unlikely that a popular module will be in the cache - Safari double keys it's cache to prevent 3rd-parties tracking across sites - Usage of common libraries is just too low for their to be a critical mass A whole site running on a CDN still involves only one connection, will make use of the throughput growing the TCP congestion…

on “Pika CDN – A CDN for Modern JavaScript”Footnote: if the scripts are not necessary for interaction, moving them to the footer and marking them deferred/async allows you to prevent the browser preloader[0] from being too eager with downloading them during downtime. This is effectively a poor man's resource priority hints[1], allowing the developer the ability to prioritize downloads for the browser. [0] https://andydavies.me/blog/2013/10/22/how-the-browser…

on “Speeding up this site by 50x (2014)”Should only work for first party though. Safari partitions its cache by the origin in the address bar[1] so your typical advertising tracking should not work. [1] https://andydavies.me/blog/2018/09/06/safari-caching-and-3rd...

on “Cookieless cookies (2013)”Is there anything that can be done with a non jailbroken iPhone to circumvent certificate pinning? I'm reading[0] that Frida can work "if you can include Frida’s libraries in the app - either via debugging an app you own, or repackaging someone else’s app and injecting the dylib." Is repackaging/injecting hard to do? Thanks! [0] https://andydavies.me/blog/2019/12/12/capturing-and-decrypti...
