What Hacker News says?

  1. https://a3nm.net/blog Ridiculously infrequent (but there's RSS of course, so who cares). Random postings about stuff that interests me (software, theoretical computer science and research, language). The blog is purely static with no Javascript or cookies or ads or analytics of any kind. Why you should read it: I don't know, I'm not really looking for an audience :) but I do think I qualify as an actual human being

  3. The distinction is subtle, because there is a common dark pattern where websites try to trick you into creating an account to access public content, even though you don't actually need to. I'm thinking of Dropbox, which does this when you try to access a link that someone shared with you by email https://a3nm.net/share/2016-12-07_548165.png This is a dark pattern because it's trying to make me believe that I should…

  5. It's not really related but it made me think of a friend's PhD thesis on uncertain data. If the subject interests you, be sure to checkout the summary of his (impressive) work: http://a3nm.net/blog/phd_summary.html .

  7. This looks nice, with a much more legible syntax than LaTeX. I'd love to use this, e.g., on my blog. The reasons why I won't: - No server-side rendering. I don't want to burden my reader's browser with Javascript. (With MathJax, you can do it server-side, I explained how here: https://a3nm.net/blog/selfhost_mathjax.html ) - The project looks dead: https://github.com/asciimath/asciimathml/pulse/monthly

  9. Some people already did a good job at making libs and tools to easily interact with IRC: libircclient [1] and the irctk [2] wrapper around it comes to mind. Using irctk it's remarkably easy to write an IRC bot that does whatever you want. [1] http://www.ulduzsoft.com/libircclient/ [2] https://a3nm.net/blog/irctk.html

  11. For mutt users, a great new feature in this release (technically, in mutt 1.5.24) is crypt_opportunistic_encrypt, which allows you to encrypt your messages with GPG automatically whenever the recipients also support GPG. See the manual http://www.mutt.org/doc/manual/#crypt-opportunistic-encrypt and I also wrote a blogpost with some more details https://a3nm.net/blog/mutt_crypt_opportunistic_encrypt.html

  13. It is saddening to see so much pessimism in the thread. Tight regulations on reproducibility are the first thing academia needs. Academia is a rat race with so much dishonesty and optimizing for measure (citation count etc..) these days. I have seen too many of professors producing low quality papers for the sake of producing papers - which creates a lot of noise, and a cargo cult PhD culture. Without reproducibilit…

  15. Yes, but they are only exchanging a constant amount of information to fool the server challenge, whereas we could hope to do better if the server builds challenges which use information that he knows the client has. For some reason, this inspired me to write a blog post: http://a3nm.net/blog/deduplication_attacks.html and http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2489594

  19. Thanks a lot! I think you understood the problem correctly, I checked your argument and it seems correct to me, see https://cstheory.stackexchange.com/questions/20245/subset-of... We have no specific plans for this result but it's always comforting to have an answer after all and know that it's in P. Plus this way I learnt about the existence of submodular functions. :) List updated ( http://a3nm.net/work/research/q…

  25. The number of articles is a terrible metric of the quantity of content of a Wikipedia. A far better way to measure this is to look at the size of the data dumps of http://download.wikimedia.org (compressed so as to normalize differences in information density between languages). (Shameless plug: I tried to do that three years ago http://a3nm.net/blog/wikimedia_projects_by_size.html -- it could probably be done again…
