What Hacker News says?
Datastore isn't proprietary, AppScale ( http://www.appscale.com ) has built a handy OSS version which runs above Cassandra. https://github.com/AppScale/appscale Disclaimer: I work at GCP, so I'm geeked about open approaches to solving problems :)

HN discussion> Plus there's no way to failover from App Engine to some other platform if your app is locked into the "App Engine Way". Well, except that there is an open-source alternative implementation of App Engine that you can run anywhere you want. [1] Which kind of ruins the whole "no way to failover from App Engine to some other platform" argument, even for apps built the "App Engine Way". [1] http://www.appscale.com/

HN discussion> there is a lock-in effect if you build on top of App Engine's proprietary APIs. No. There hasn't been for quite some time. http://www.appscale.com/ provides hosting services on top of an open-source codebase you can (with some effort) deploy on your own.

HN discussionBecause you can host your App Engine applications on other platforms yourself? http://www.jboss.org/capedwarf http://www.appscale.com/ Also, I recommend developing for App Engine as an educational experience. Building a good App Engine application may seem a little bit constrained, but it teaches you a lot about how to make something fault-tolerant and able to scale horizontally.
