What Hacker News says?

  1. Their very own blog post goes into plenty of detail about this: https://www.pdftron.com/blog/wasm/wasm-vs-pnacl/ It's nothing fundamental about WASM; in fact they state that the actual computations are slightly faster.

  3. Also a much slower one - on PDFTron's benchmark, WASM is half as fast as PNacl for me: https://www.pdftron.com/benchmarks/pnacl-vs-wasm/ .

  5. PDFTron provides an SDK and isn't really meant as a plug-and-play end-user application. But it can accomplish what you're looking for. Here's how to extract text from a PDF based on coordinates (this explains how to do it on web, but it's also possible using other platforms): https://groups.google.com/d/msg/pdfnet-webviewer/h2W3VksbQUI... 7. I don't think this solution is doing what you are looking for. To detect tables reliably in PDF you need some heavy-duty AI like https://www.pdftron.com/pdf-tools/pdf-table-extraction/

  11. We have an application using a web based PDF viewer (PDFTron) and printing PDFs has always been a pain point. That library supports "embedded printing" which only works on Chrome ( https://www.pdftron.com/documentation/web/guides/print/overv... ). So for now we're advising our customers to use Chrome for our application. Do you know if this is something being improved upon? Sorry this is a bit OT!

  15. Do you have recommendations for which libraries or APIs currently perform the best at extracting tables and extracting text? 17. Disclaimer: I work for PDFTron This is a very interesting field, and PDFTron has been doing similar work with ML and table extraction as part of our document understanding platform. We've made pretty good progress over the past year -- you can try it on your docs here: https://www.pdftron.com/pdf-tools/pdf-table-extraction/ We also have a rules-based table extraction product (PDFGenie) that works reasonably well, bu…

  18. So much better that PNaCL still outperforms WASM. https://www.pdftron.com/blog/wasm/wasm-vs-pnacl/ And it doesn't offer any significant security improvements, in spite of its marketing, compiling Heartbleed into WASM is still possible.

  19. Here's a direct link to the client-side benchmark tool to test your own documents and pull numbers directly: https://www.pdftron.com/benchmarks/pnacl-vs-wasm/ Note that it only works in Chrome b/c it's the only browser that supported PNaCl (recently deprecated). Edge Beta (with chromium underneath) is buggy, so best not to use it for this tool.

  22. Consider converting the PDF to HTML, and then annotate the HTML, http://web.hypothes.is Three years ago I faced this problem while creating a prototype to annotate research papers, and used a client side library by http://annotateit.org which posted annotations to my own server. The conversion from HTML to PDF was handled by http://pdftron.com DocPub.
