Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Linked in threads on H.264 versus Theora, YouTube's video storage and Goldman Sachs data volumes, as a source for scale figures. The URL slug is 'how-to-find-out-the-number-of-...'; comments only link it.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. And what if you have around 8 petabytes of video ( http://beerpla.net/2008/08/14/how-to-find-out-the-number-of-... ) in H.264? What would you do, double your storage? How long would that take to re-encode anyways. The reason why Youtube is using H.264 instead of Theora is because they already have the videos in that format.

  3. > Goldman Sachs alone stores more data than the entire web Why would you believe that Goldman Sachs stores more data than can be reached by HTTP?! Only YouTube amounts to petabytes of data. http://beerpla.net/2008/08/14/how-to-find-out-the-number-of-...

  7. If you're going to look at Sphinx, you'd do yourself a disservice by not also looking at Solr. Solr has effectively the same feature set, including geospatial and multilingual searching, but it has better relevance, and generally is faster at returning query results (although Sphinx is faster at doing full reindexes). Also, unlike Sphinx, Solr doesn't glue you to MySQL. Or to any SQL database; use it with Cassandra,…

  9. I may have a link in there, but it's a legit post made from my heart. For what it's worth, here's a review I've done 3 years ago of the SuperFi 5, which is a step down from these: http://beerpla.net/2006/09/18/review-of-ultimate-ears-superf... . I've listened to TripleFi 10 too and they're even more amazing, if that was even possible. Fatwallet has a discussion on these with a very green rating for those in doubt ab…
