What Hacker News says?
I have set up a battery of scripts on google app engine and Im pretty happy with it. 1. I have a script to automatically buy small amount of BTC every day 2. For the more knowledge-dense books I read, I write summaries of them ( https://piszek.com/books/ ). I have a script that puts a random book review to my pocket for reviewing every week 3. I have an instagram account of lego minifig ( https://www.instagram.com/l…

HN discussionThank you! Your post hit really hard, because a) Sole focus of my team IS MRR. b) I wrote something very similar. Sorry if my comment is a little maendering, I am a dad as of 7 days and what they tell you about sleep is no joke. I want to plug in one of the less famous Drucker quotes: > Working on the right things is what makes knowledge work effective. This is not capable of being measured by any of the yardsticks…

HN discussionI was also tempted to use new IOT amazon buttons with the IOT AWS offering ( https://aws.amazon.com/iot/ ), but after looking a bit deeper, the free limit is not that high. Instead, I bought ESP8266 Wemos D1 mini for $4 each. Instead of AWS IOT I used Google Firebase and I have to admit, it works pretty sweet for me. IFTTT, Siri integration and all. https://piszek.com/2015/06/24/smartpi/

HN discussion> The world didn't used to be like that. I credit Christianity with the invention of proselytizing; religions before it (including Judaism, its immediate parent) were content to stay with a given tribe and not try to spread. While I do agree that this seem to be very correlated with the montoheistic religions (wrote about exactly that here): > Monotheism makes it really hard to consider the arguments of the other si…

HN discussionI'm on the leave right now! I am writing this comment with my baby daughter on my lap, and it’s not easy - sorry for the typos (oh boy, do babies love grabbing the phone). Automattic (The company I work for) offers six months of paid parental leave regardless of gender. Both my wife and I work there, and she just finished her parental leave. I decided to take the full six months right after. I have to admit to some…

HN discussionThere is a book by the same title - "Clock of the long now". My favourite line is "In the long run saving yourself requires saving the whole world." I am getting kind of obssesed how all the problems we are experiencing now stem form externalizing consequences to the future. Climate change, messed up economy or even technical debt stem from making choices that have only short-term consequences in mind. Speaking of t…

HN discussionI work in Automattic. I had taken approx. 21 days of vacation so far this year. I intend to take another ~20 this year. I actually feel lazy because of this, so when I do work, I try to really focus. The result is, in one day I can accomplish what took me a week in previous job. Mostly, because nobody is interrupting me ( we don't have an office ) We are hiring, here is my experience: https://piszek.com/2016/04/05/a…

HN discussionIf you write something that we would love, or sparks an awesome discussion - it is your DUTY to submit it :D. The goal here is to find interesting stories, not get "white knight points" for refusing to post your own content. I submitted many of my own articles here and they have trended. Frankly, it constitutes most of my submissions. Since HN is the way I get information, it is hard for me to pitch anything novel s…
