What Hacker News says?

  1. > There’s another exodus of twitter users, and most servers are run by individuals Again, Expecting non-techies to self-host their own instances after several of them falling over due to light usage and signups is quite wishful thinking and reiterates the need for users to heavily rely on more centralized instances to on board users. Well all know what happened to mastodon.technology which was run by an individual.…

  3. > Large central services give reasonable stability as to not easily shut down altogether, having your account and all content removed. On Mastodon, this is a constant threat. I'd be interested to see the halflife of centralized services generally to be able to tease out the patterns in a way less vulnerable to survivorship bias. I recognize that invoking Google's product shutdowns is like the free space on the HN co…

  7. I find it difficult to get my head around mastodon and federated messaging in general. It seems like a lot of effort to go to when all I want is a social messaging app. I want to make an account once and be able to message anyone else on whatever app I'm using, not have to worry about whether my chosen node happens to be connected to theirs, not to mention that something like this [0] can happen and then apparently…

  9. Call it my crutch, but I got an app shipped without having to worry about a lot of the baggage that comes with Objective-C as a language. Here's two of my favorite examples of things I didn't have to worry about: http://nshipster.com/nil/ (wat) http://ashfurrow.com/blog/seven-deadly-sins-of-modern-object... (6/7 of these don't apply...testing is something I need to work on though!)

  17. I could say the same about overwhelming number of articles on HN, especially those related to software development, that they are kind of an advertisement. The person also does not seem to be affiliated with CDN provider of his choice [0]. [0]: https://ashfurrow.com/about/

  19. Joey who opened https://github.com/artsy/README/issues/427 is one of the best 10x engineers I’ve ever had the privilege to work with. If it’s important to him to rename all branches from “master” to “joey” I’d add my plus 1. Jokes aside, please read Ash’s (another artsy alumni) post on psychological safety, hope it changes your mind: https://ashfurrow.com/blog/building-compassionate-software/
