Why HN links it

HN readers link Chipstrat's posts on chip economics, such as cost per transistor and the limits of Moore's Law, and on AI's effect on software jobs. Comments cite them without judging the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 2 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. The pivot to cloud had a decade warmup before HOWTO was normalized to existing standards. In the lead up a lot of the same naysaying we see about AI was everywhere. AI can be compressed into less logic on a chip, bootstrap from models. Require less state management tooling software dev relies on now. We’re slowly being trained to accept a down turn in software jobs. No need to generate the code that makes up an elec…

  3. Yep, only yield improvements and equipment depreciation are really in the cards. Cost per transistor increased from 7nm to 5nm, but we're about at breakeven with 3nm again. If there's not real fab competition at 2nm then prices per transistor likely won't fall. I suspect the same is true at 1nm. It doesn't feel like any of the alternatives (CNT etc) are really able to step up right now either. https://www.chipstrat.…
