Why HN links it

HN readers link BackSlasher's posts as technical references: an SSH versus OpenVPN tunneling comparison, a PowerShell script that keeps Windows awake, and a note on very large strings. Comments do not judge the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 5 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. My personal opinion is that if the USB enclosure is that flaky then it's not worth trusting it to operate when it's time to do a restore. You could shuck the drive and connect it directly or find a reliable USB enclosure. Putting the disk in /etc/fstab by uuid should keep it mounted to the same directory at least, but I'll be surprised if the backup software properly handles the potential errors well. The following…

  3. I was going to object with "port forwarding is tcp over tcp!" but it turns out after a little research that this is totally wrong and its faster this way than openvpn: http://blog.backslasher.net/ssh-openvpn-tunneling.html . I guess I ended up thinking this because it's how the dynamic port forwarding works?

  9. on MacOS, caffeine is a good tool but if you need it in dock (pill?) form, the amazing Amphetamine app is there for you. It'll even (if you use safari) keep you up just long enough to finish that big download. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/amphetamine/id937984704?mt=12 on Windows, the process involves taking a Power Request. A Display power request keeps the display awake, and is the overriding above most all else.…

  11. Normally Windows apps can call SetThreadExecutionState to request the screensaver not come on. Video players do this, as do some other apps. See here[1] for a Powershell script that does just this, for example. I suppose they could have deployed some group policy that disables this behavior. That'd be annoying if it's the case.
