Some network stacks like those in Solaris and HP/UX let you tune the "Nagle limit" in just such a fashion, up to disabling it entirely by setting it to 1. I'm not aware of it being tunable on Linux, though you can manually control the buffering using TCP_CORK. https://baus.net/on-tcp_cork/ has some nice details.

  5. You're not alone: http://baus.net/im-bipolar It is interesting that meditation was one of your triggers. Meditation and mindful awareness is something I'm personally spending a lot of time on to reverse the effects of bipolar -- specifically to slow racing thoughts and dislocation from the moment. For me, I feel like it helps. Many things that cause me anxiety I'm able to work out through meditation. For me, one of…

  7. Here are couple ideas I've written on the topic: http://baus.net/i-don%27t-like-public-speaking/ I did quite a bit of public speaking in the past couple years and it gets easier over time. I think the best advice is prepare, prepare, prepare.

  15. I remember years ago, I had a blog entry hit the homepage of Reddit: http://baus.net/rails-wrong-language/ . I think the user that posted it was Linuxer or something like that. But the account had a ton of karma and there was some question if it was just a bot run by Reddit.

  17. I see this problem all the time in our marketing department. I think Microsoft Office is the problem, and the solution is to move toward systems which support collaborative document editing like wikis. One of my pet peeves is emailed Word documents that the author has no intention that the reader will print. I prefer to read most documents in a web browser. I consider Word documents (and PDFs) to be skeuomorphs from…

  19. I speculated that this might be the case. http://baus.net/instagram-is-twitter-the-loser Strangely, Chris Sacca and Jack Dorsey were both investors in Instagram and they still lost the deal. I suspect it just got to rich for them. I don't think this bodes well for Twitter.

  25. It was non-trivial for Kodak to replace the $16B in revenue they had from film. Having been a student in Rochester during Kodak's peak revenue, I have no doubt they saw digital coming, but what to do about it was less than obvious. If Kodak could have been Adobe, Flikr, and Instagram all rolled into one, they still wouldn't have same revenue they had in the 90s. I wrote about this before here: http://baus.net/will-t…

  29. As someone who has spent most of his career in report creation and management (specifically in financial asset management), I find the current state of enterprise reporting in flux. In finance, most documents are still laid out for print (PDFs, Word Docs, and even PowerPoints), but users are printing them less frequently and viewing them either online or on their tablets, and IMO the user experience leaves a lot to…
