What Hacker News says?
Another case of blaming a symptom rather than the cause. The media began showing Tweets because Twitter had reached a sufficient audience size. The real problem is the audience size. Stroustrup famously said [1]: > There are only two kinds of languages: the ones people complain about and the ones nobody uses. I'd paraphrase this about communication platforms (including social media, Reddit, forums, etc): > There are…

HN discussionThis is laid out pretty early on by Bjourne in his PPP book[0], > We do not assume that you — our reader — want to become a professional programmer and spend the rest of your working life writing code. Even the best programmers — especially the best programmers — spend most of their time not writing code. Understanding problems takes serious time and often requires significant intellectual effort. That intellectual…

HN discussionYou'd lose a pretty good employee then: http://www.stroustrup.com/3rd_notes.pdf > At first glance, this presentation style will seem ‘‘unnatural’’ to programmers accustomed to seeing code in constant-width fonts. However, proportional-width fonts are generally regarded as better than constant-width fonts for presentation of text. Using a proportional-width font also allows me to present code with fewer illogical lin…

Strictly speaking, these are implementation details that the C standard leaves unspecified. If you want to know how the memory allocation…

HN discussionYes, feels like websites that consist of 3 sentences of actual information spreed across 5 paragraphs are winning. Also, I don't like how google tries to demote controversial "wrong think". Why doesn't google show stuff like https://based.cooking/ or https://www.stroustrup.com/bs_faq2.html higher? I think it would be great if in the settings you could upload e.g. some python code that modifies some parameters. I wou…

HN discussionBjarne Stroustrup proposed Generalized Overloading for C++2000, which not only lets you override all kinds of white space, like between two symbols separated left to right by a space (i.e. "a b" to add a to b), or two symbols separated top to bottom by a newline (i.e. "a \n b" to divide a by b, like a fraction), or even by tabs, or either kind of comment, but it also lets you override writing two symbols next to eac…

HN discussionMaybe now it is, but before STL etc. were thought of, C++ was intended by its creator to bring better support for OOP to C. See http://www.stroustrup.com/bs_faq.html#why

HN discussionThey care deeply about software security and memory flaws (everyone should). If rust had an ISO standard, then it could be used in more sensitive military and aerospace systems. https://www.stroustrup.com/JSF-AV-rules.pdf Also, when something is an ISO standard, then governments can't legislate that some countries may not be allowed to use it. https://help.duo.com/s/article/7544?language=en_US

HN discussionSorry for the late response. A company named SCO claims they own the language. They obviously don't (possibly just a specific compiler), but they still try (or tried for a while) to charge licensing fees. I'm having a hard time finding references to this now, but here are two links that talk a bit about it: https://lwn.net/Articles/39227/ http://www.stroustrup.com/bs_faq.html#revenues

HN discussionBjarne Stroustrup, C++ creator, disagrees, IIRC. Think I read it on his site. Edit: https://www.stroustrup.com/bs_faq.html#C-is-subset >Please note that "C" in the paragraphs above refers to Classic C and C89. C++ is not a descendant of C99; C++ and C99 are siblings.

HN discussionI'd also look a the Joint Strike Fighter C++ Coding Standard. Stroustrup himself hosts it as an example of how C++ is a multi paradigm language that you can use a subset of to meet your engineering needs. http://www.stroustrup.com/JSF-AV-rules.pdf
