Amazing the things we do for our little ones. I built a toddler-friendly keyboard for my son. He's still playing some form of piano 6 years later, no longer with his fists or feet. https://blog.afandian.com/2019/09/ux-for-toddlers/

HN discussionMy first thought was "if you can SSH then you can pipe" and, like magic, you can pipe the wacom device from /dev through SSH to a computer. The result was this: https://gitlab.com/afandian/pipes-and-paper Blog post https://blog.afandian.com/2020/10/pipes-and-paper-remarkable... It's kind of abandonware now, but some others have made some great forks! https://gitlab.com/afandian/pipes-and-paper/-/forks https://github…

HN discussionThis is an excellent blog post, though it made me sick reading it. I recently made the switch. I went from trying to limit how much I log in (to once or twice a week), to actually not logging in. I've been cold-turkey for two months (except for a couple of times when I had a very specific reason to check something). I thought it would be difficult. Turns out it's not so hard, and it's the fear of reduced social cont…

HN discussionI've posted some negative stuff in this thread but I had some great fun hacking my rM1. https://blog.afandian.com/2020/10/pipes-and-paper-remarkable... https://gitlab.com/afandian/pipes-and-paper/ There's some quite good forks of that code too.

HN discussionThis contract is causing outrage in the open science corner of the world. Many people think this is a conflict of interest. And many are unhappy that closed, private infrastructure is being used. In the broader context, hardly a day goes by without a story about problematic public infrastructure contracts. Organised commercial companies always have an advantage over open, transparent, community projects. Here's my t…

HN discussionChucK brings back memories! I was involved with the Oxford Laptop Orchestra in 2012, and did a few "programming for musicians" lessons in ChucK. Writeups here: https://blog.afandian.com/tags/oxlork/

HN discussionI planned to use the tablet to connect to a tmux session and mirror a shell session on my laptop. I could then type on the laptop but use the RLCD display. Not a crazy idea, but might look a little weird. I’ve had a reMarkable 1 for a few years, and even had fun hacking it [0] but ultimately it’s too restrictive and slow for what I ended up using for, which was reading and annotating PDFs away from my desk. on “E Ink faces growing competition in the "paper-like" display space”Since you did get the reference, there's an easter egg in the spoken version of this just for you. https://blog.afandian.com/2019/09/ux-for-toddlers/ I did reference the Boite at another Oxford Geek Night presentation about visualising (and hearing) data, including some stage-makeup blood, which did bleed from my ears. A few people got the joke, but not enough to make it worthwhile going round with fake blood on my…

on “A Light Box in Heavy Times”Thanks! The previous project was a playful take on UX. https://blog.afandian.com/2019/09/ux-for-toddlers/ Thanks for the video, I love seeing performances like that. I've been fascinated with those grid MIDI controllers for a while. I started this project with a Launchpad Mini but didn't have the energy to work out how to make it battery powered and reliable (there's an excellent Python library but it was a bit flak…

on “A Light Box in Heavy Times”Is it any good? I bought an Aquaris M10 with Ubuntu touch and, to be honest, I felt that the advertising was dishonest and left a bad taste in the mouth, especially as Ubuntu dropped it shortly after. And it's not like I wanted the moon on a stick. I don't use 'apps'. Just capable web browser, reliable on-screen keyboard and a stable implementation of the promised 'convergence', would have done me fine. My thoughts…

on “Going FLOSS-only on Android”I wrote some blog posts about ChucK a couple of years ago. I thought it would be interesting to teach programming from the point of view of music. http://blog.afandian.com/tag/oxlork/ It was a rewarding experience, and quite fun to start from musical principles, which have many common concepts, ranging from control structures to continuous and integer variables. This was part of the Oxford University Laptop Orchestr…

on “ChucK: Strongly-Timed Music Programming Language”I've had a ReMarkable 1 for a few years (including doing a bit of hacking [0]). My advice is don't rely on doing anything it wasn't designed for. It's fun to make it do novel things, but software updates can introduce breaking changes. There are plenty of Android tablets with e-ink that do support running arbitrary code. on “Review: ReMarkable Paper Pro”As a beekeeper, and one who does it for the bees rather than the honey (one kind of emotional motivation rather than another), there's a balance to be struck when using human emotions to describe bees (beyond the simplistic "don't anthropomorphize"). I blogged about it yesterday: http://blog.afandian.com/2016/09/first-honey/

on “Quick Look at BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition Tablet”That's exactly what I'm doing! Nothing grandiose. https://blog.afandian.com/tags/harmonium/ By 'repaired' you mean closing a fracture? I'm interested to hear your experiences! Electronics solder or silver solder? This one is 60 cents sharp across the board (not uncommmon), but I wanted a social instrument. So I brought them down with solder. The bottom two octaves have worked out well. The next two... we'll see. I n…
