I'm using Pushover a lot, it exists for a very long time, never changes and just works. It's also very easy to wire it up to existing tools as it can listen to webhooks. In my case I just did that recently to receive webhooks and send them to my phone: https://blog.notmyhostna.me/posts/push-notifications-from-ap...

HN discussionBlogs are still there, just not easily findable through Google as most of the ones you find are low-value SEO blogs aiming at search engine traffic. Discovery is a problem but I just subscribe to blogs when I find them via RSS (Blogs still have RSS, it's hard to find one without which is surprising but I'm glad that's the case), over time I build up my list of blogs I like and they usually link to other blogs and th…

HN discussionI was looking at many of these "selfhosted Heroku" type of solutions recently and read many HN discussions about the different options (coolify.io, ploi, ...) as I migrated to a new server and always copying, adapting nginx configs got a bit old. I've landed on Dokku in the end as it's the one with the least amount of "magic" involved and even if I stopped using it I could just uninstall it and have everything still…

HN discussionI recently was also doing some research into what projects exist that come close to a “managed Postgres on Digital Ocean” experience, sadly there’s some building blocks but nothing that really makes it a complete no-brainer. https://blog.notmyhostna.me/posts/what-i-wish-existed-for-se...

HN discussionI recently set up Restic to backup my server to my local Synology and it was actually surprisingly easy. Before that I was using Duplicity which broke after a while and it all felt a bit more tricky to get going. Documented it a bit here, mostly so I can go back and copy / paste commands if I have to: https://blog.notmyhostna.me/backup-cloud-server-to-synology-...

HN discussionI'd also suggest people to take a look at Dokku, it's a very mature project with a similar scope and was discussed here a few weeks ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41358020 I wrote up my own experiences too ( https://blog.notmyhostna.me/posts/selfhosting-with-dokku-and... ) and I can only recommend it. It is ~3 commands to set up an app, and one push to deploy after that.

HN discussionI did the same a few weeks ago ( https://blog.notmyhostna.me/posts/ssd-upgrade-for-mac-mini-m... ), usually I’m far into the “just pay for convenience” camp but this was so easy to do and the price difference was just too big. Saving $500 for 30 min of actual work that’s also easily reversible if needed for a support case is too good to ignore.

HN discussionThanks for asking. I think one barrier with self-hosting is still that setting up a database isn't as easy as on DigitalOcean / Supabase. I'm an experienced self-hoster but running my own database still sometimes makes me a bit anxious as I have to set up scripts to do backups, set up scripts to see if my backups are being done correctly, set up metrics to see backups sizes, database sizes etc. I just wrote this up…

HN discussionI mostly blog for myself ( https://blog.notmyhostna.me ) as a way to summarize something I learned. It's a low effort way of sharing something and link to it on Slack / Twitter. My thinking is if I spend the time to figure something out I might as well post it public and not in some silo where I won't find it again.

HN discussionUnfortunately there's still no proper "upgrade" command for cask, there's a lengthy discussion on how to deal with that on their issue tracker [0] though. For now you'll still have to rely on a workaround. Currently I'm using an alias to clear the old binary and download the new one. HN discussionYou could give https://newsboat.org a try, it's a fork of Newsbeuter. I shared my Newsbeuter setup a long time ago here ( https://blog.notmyhostna.me/posts/using-newsbeuter-to-read-y... ) but have since moved on to https://miniflux.app and Reeder (iPad OS, iOS, Mac). They all support the Google Reader API so it makes using any client very easy.

HN discussionI second Ghost for that use case, I'm using it for years already for my personal blog (not very active: https://blog.notmyhostna.me ) and it's getting better all the time without getting bloated so far. I never really got started with static site generators as it's just too much overhead for me. HN discussionI've recently built a gaming pc after decades of not having one, one of the reasons was MSFS. I'm not a huge gamer of FS expert but just having the possibility to use some of the amazing tools that the community built on top of it are worth it, for understandable reasons these are not available on the console version. One example of such a tool would be Little Navmap which makes it possible to plan routes and use yo…

HN discussionHave you tried Swinsian? I recently switched to it after the Music.app became mandatory and I'm very happy with it. Small indie app with a straight forward non-subscription business model that has all the best parts of the old iTunes and is very customizable. HN discussionOn iOS there's a healthy selection of standalone apps I'd say, most of them offer support to sync with paid or self-hosted online services (If they support the Fever API). My current combination is a self-hosted Miniflux instance and Reeder on iOS and macOS as clients. I wrote a little bit about it here: https://blog.notmyhostna.me/sad-state-of-rss-on-the-mac/ and there's a good discussion with other readers here (…
