Why HN links it
HN readers link AMD's developer and company blog posts, covering a GPU programming project that compiles JVM bytecode to OpenCL, contest rules for a 48-core giveaway, and server-side game rendering.

What Hacker News says?
If you want an "easy" way get into GPU development, AMD recently launched an interesting (open source) project that transparently compiles JVM bytecode into OpenCL: http://blogs.amd.com/developer/2011/09/14/i-dont-always-writ... Definitely the easiest way I've seen to begin mucking around with GPU development.

HN discussionincidentally, this is a usa/canada competition only - http://blogs.amd.com/work/48-cores-official-contest-rules/ (posting because i was about to put some serious effort into this and suspect other "foreigners" here might be caught out in the same way)

HN discussionYup. In fact, some groups are looking to push this solution even further, so that all the game processing/rendering takes place on the server: http://blogs.amd.com/unprocessed/2009/03/27/server-side-rend... It sounds like they still have some issues with latency and bandwidth to work out, but not all games need low latency. And this solution neatly solves the piracy problem -- even for single player games -- as well…
