What Hacker News says?

  1. I believe they hired him under the impression of doing actual Scheme for the browser, but then they did the old corporate bait-and-switch on him: "The immediate concern at Netscape was it must look like Java. People have done Algol-like syntaxes for Lisp but I didn't have time to take a Scheme core so I ended up doing it all directly and that meant I could make the same mistakes that others make." http://bryanpendle…

  3. Agreed that AST diff is better, but there's also just better diff algorithms like the lesser-known Tichy diff: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/220439403_The_Strin... that I learned from http://bryanpendleton.blogspot.com/2010/04/more-study-of-dif... ; it seems to preserve more context and is better suited for big code refactors.

  5. A while ago I discovered the lesser known Tichy diff algorithm that seems to preserve more context and is better suited for big code refactors compared to Myers: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/220439403_The_Strin... via https://bryanpendleton.blogspot.com/2010/04/more-study-of-di...

  7. Given that Apple are the major sponsor of LLVM and they're not exactly cash poor, I think it's reasonable to conclude that being able to throw money and people at LLVM development doesn't explain why it's still much slower than the Go compiler toolchain. In hindsight the Go team made the right call to use their own toolchain. As enneff alludes, Ken Thompson's antipathy towards C++ is well documented: https://bryanpe…

  9. Here you go, it's called Tichy diff: http://ftp.cs.purdue.edu/research/technical_reports/1983/TR%... This 1983 paper is still relevant today, it's an algorithm much better suited for code diffs and I'd like to use this instead. It's the best algorithm for big code refactors. I implemented it in Go, and hope to get back to it. Learned about it on: http://bryanpendleton.blogspot.com/2010/04/more-study-of-dif...

  15. Also, http://bryanpendleton.blogspot.com/2009/11/coders-at-work-br... Just in case you do not know, like me. “ I’m not proud, but I’m happy that I chose Scheme-ish first-class functions and Self-ish (albeit singular) prototypes as the main ingredients. The Java influences, especially y2k Date bugs but also the primitive vs. object distinction (e.g., string vs. String), were unfortunate... I still think of it as a qu…
