Why HN links it

HN commenters link Bryan Summersett's 2012 post on Steve Yegge's Grok project at Google whenever new language-tooling projects such as JetBrains' Nitra come up. The post is cited as a reference, not praised.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Steve Yegge at Google is/was involved in a project called 'Grok' which sounds pretty similar to that. I really hope it catches on also. http://bsumm.net/2012/08/11/steve-yegge-and-grok.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTJs-0EInW8 HN discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4371267

  5. This looks very much in the spirit of Yegges' 'Grok' project at Google [1][2]. Does anyone know if that project is still alive? [1] http://bsumm.net/2012/08/11/steve-yegge-and-grok.html [2] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTJs-0EInW8

  7. This sounds a lot like Steve Yegge's Grok: http://bsumm.net/2012/08/11/steve-yegge-and-grok.html It's unlikely that his version will ever be open sourced or usable outside of Google though.

  9. Excellent reference. Papert created his own theory called constructionism based on the tenants of learning by doing and accumulated knowledge acquisition (genetic epistemology). He emphasized making learning tools meaningful and relevant to children, so that they could use their prior experiences to help model new concepts. With LOGO, children used imperatives to command a turtle around on screen. When things went w…

  10. This gets us ever closer to the goals of the elusive (and presumably abandoned?) Grok project [1]. I'd love to see syntax highlighters (like Pygments), editors and IDEs, autocompletion providers, debuggers, and all other language-related tooling consume a standardized canonical "language description format". Making a new language? Bam! It's automatically supported by Visual Studio, Eclipse, Emacs, vim, Sublime Text,…

  12. Are you looking for something similar to Steve Yegge's Grok Project[1]? He's currently trying to bring toolchain parity across all languages and clients. It's a little more ambitious goal than what you're describing, but it does benefit from the fact that it's already being funded (Google is paying Steve's salary). As for paying for what you've described, I would have to have a very good assurance that something wou…
