What Hacker News says?

  1. Hi, if possible, could the link please be updated to point to the original post at https://beesbuzz.biz/blog/2934-Advice-to-young-web-developer... ? The Tumblr automatic crosspost isn't really intended to be the canonical version, and I wouldn't mind getting a server load test while we're here. Thanks!

  3. I had posted this to my own blog at http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/2934-Advice-to-young-web-developers and it looks like it was the Tumblr auto-crossposted version that got submitted here. That's unfortunate. EDIT: I've updated the Tumblr version to make this a bit more clear.

  7. Many years ago I wrote an article about this very issue (because I ran into it while debugging a service outage at 5 AM, which turned out to be something using select() when it shouldn't have): http://beesbuzz.biz/code/5739-The-problem-with-select-vs-pol...

  9. Wow. I ran this archive back in the 90s, when I was a student at NMSU and it was one of my ancillary duties when I worked part-time for the IT department. I wasn't a fan of OS/2 myself but I appreciated how much of a community there was around it and how excited people were to continue to use it. When I inherited it the website was put together with duct tape and paperclips (and Comic Sans), and the files were prett…

  17. Aside: Please for the love of God do not force emails to be unique and also require separate accounts per person ( especially if you previously did not). This causes no end of irritation for elderly couples who only use a family email, and they WILL switch to your competitors (and I will help them do so) if yours gets in the way of them sharing like they always used to. 21. Never specifically heard about this terminology until now, but after looking, yeah, I can see why ppl prefer 'artificial' keys to natural ones. From the animal shelter example, for people it uses email as the 'natural' key, which immediately runs up against 1,2,3 and 7 in https://beesbuzz.biz/code/439-Falsehoods-programmers-believe...

  24. According to the Topaz developer[1], it was cracked over a year ago; apparently the Topaz algorithm was, like .azw before it, trivially bypassed by prodding at the KindleForPC application. Furthermore, Topaz is a rarely-used specialty format. It has existed for at least three years (based on the blog's date and text), but AZW/mobi continues to be by far the dominant format for purchased Kindle books. [1] http://bees…
