  1. Personally, I have been using byuu's user script for this. I also love it for the click tracking removal and display of the complete url. https://byuu.org/projects/google

  3. Hi all, thank you for sharing this article here! It is technically a "laymen's" version of https://byuu.org/articles/edge-of-emulation (submitted here earlier), meant for a wider audience, but it does elaborate on some new discoveries such as the digital video output testing mode. In the off chance anyone is able to help with this, I've set up a Discord channel (#ars) for coordination here: https://discord.gg/Fx7TfK…

  5. Conversedly, there's higan[1] (formerly bsnes), a multi-system emulator focused on accuracy, even if it's at the expense of speed. A very beefy current CPU is necessary to emulate the sfc/snes. [1] https://byuu.org/emulation/higan/

  7. They do, absurdly enough. See for example BSNES, https://byuu.org/ , here's a quote from their most recent release notes: "If the coprocessor firmware is missing, bsnes will fallback on HLE where it is supported, which is everything other than SD Gundam GX and the two Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shougi games." See past HN submissions about the extreme lengths BSNES goes to in order to get this data: https://news.ycombina…

  9. At the hardware level, the author of BSNES recently wrote up an excellent rant on sources of latency in modern machines https://byuu.org/articles/latency/ But, most of what you are talking about is software latency. At 1/30th of a second each, software pipelining systems seem cheap individually but pile up very quickly. Hit a button, read the button, react in AI, react in animation, react in physics, react in graphi…

  15. The author of this article is the creator of the bsnes SNES emulator[1], which is surprisingly resource-intensive even as a native binary. Making it a PWA (via WebAssembly or asm.js or whatever) just isn't practical, at least with the current state of browser tech. [1]: https://byuu.org/bsnes

  17. > I guess it's because of trying to support the capabilities of the actual sound chip? This may be the case for some emulators -- such as the NES emulator in excitebike. However, (if I understand everything I've read correctly) the SNES didn't have a 'sound chip' in the same sense that the NES (or GameBoy, C64, etc.) did. The NES and all of Nintendo's other hardware used to synthesize its sound in real-time, but tha…

  21. There's a reason I stopped associating with that scene/site years ago. Almost everyone in it is toxic and stuck in their rebellious teenage years. Case in point: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,21797.html The newer versions are called bass, and you can compare yourself here: http://byuu.org/tool/bass/ There is full documentation of every possible command, the code is readable by human beings (eg vari…

  25. > this will be massive for archive efforts It's not open source, though. That means whatever improvements for preserving Dreamcast games will be taken to the author's grave. A lot of emulator development revolves around people sharing knowledge about how things work and making incremental improvements. Taken to an extreme, if you were trying to fully map out a system from top to bottom for the explicit purpose of pr…
