I like all of Carin Meier's talks, but I think the one that made the most lasting impression was "The Joy of Flying Robots with Clojure." http://gigasquidsoftware.com/speaking/

HN discussionI think this is a good example of Spec being used to guide the solution http://gigasquidsoftware.com/blog/2016/05/29/one-fish-spec-f... I don't think Spec alone removes the need for mocking, using Clean Architecture is probably more important for that https://8thlight.com/blog/uncle-bob/2012/08/13/the-clean-arc... If you structure your app so that any IO lives at the edges, it becomes possible to test all your busin…

HN discussionAllow me to offer a counterpoint. Plenty of great developers blog and give talks while getting things done, you may enjoy post by John Carmack, talks by Sandi Metz, talks by Rich Hickey, talks and books by Carin Meller[1], talks and posts by Vaidehi Joshi[2], Kent Beck, or Dave Thomas or Elixir and Ruby fame[3]. HN discussionYou are technically correct, it's just that when the vector of booleans gets long enough they start to exhibit certain properties that "normal" binary vectors don't have. Because of this the authors use the term "hyper dimensional vector" to let other professional researchers quickly know what they are talking about. Here's a decent blog post about some of those properties: http://gigasquidsoftware.com/blog/2016/02/…

HN discussionMachines as simple as thermostats can be said to have beliefs, and having beliefs seems to be a characteristic of most machines capable of problem solving performance. -- John McCarthy A claim that a machine has consciousness seems like it would be similar to a claim that a machine has beliefs, and the correctness of such a claim probably has more to do with what the criteria are for something having beliefs or cons…

HN discussionCommuting on what? My long commutes on Amtrak and Buses have access to power -- which means my MacBook is fine. It is really a hard tradeoff of screen size to portability if you don't need to worry about power. If you do need to worry about power then an Air if you want OSX.
