Why HN links it

HN readers link Cesium's site as an open-source JavaScript library for 3D globes and maps, often as an alternative to Google Earth or other mapping tools. Comments are mostly about the library itself.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 12 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

The Cesium platform provides the foundations any software application needs to use 3D geospatial data: visualization, data pipelines, curated data, and analytics. Based on open standards for data formats and open APIs for customization and integration—and built with an open source core—Cesium is ope

  5. There are some great open source WebGL terrain renderers out there, on a planetary scale, for example: http://doarama.com/view/2171 This is built on the Cesium open source virtual globe http://cesiumjs.org/

  7. This is huge. A while back this product was offered in the enterprise market for ~$100k per instance. We have been using CesiumJS ( https://cesiumjs.org/ ), which is fantastic, partly because Google stopped developing Google Earth. But it would be great to see new features added to a very mature product.

  9. OP here: This news is dissapointing. I've been using the Google Earth API for years now and while it does feel "bolted on" it's gotten the job done. Sure the updates were slow, and bug fixes/enhancements few in the past couple of years, but it works well. I'm actively looking for an alternative. Here's a brief list of what I've found. 13. Are there any open source map platforms like this for integrating into real time data feeds (i.e. if we want to track sales by region etc...) onto a map? I know about http://cesiumjs.org/ but it was extremely resource intensive heavy last time I tried to use it. EDIT: it looks like they use http://leafletjs.com/ -- looks interesting

  14. The state of the art in open source 3D mapping right now is CesiumJS[0]. From browsing their docs, it looks like it's in a similar place, capabilities-wise. Unfortunately, the limiting factor for most projects isn't the JS library, but it's the availability of high-resolution DEMs (digital elevation models). These won't become widely available until we do something about the price of lidar. Fortunately, there's a lo…

  15. For Jollyturns ( https://jollyturns.com ) I'd like to overlay my users' ski tracks data, as well as various ski resort objects (lifts, runs etc) on a 3D Earth, to be displayed inside a browser. Why would I use Melown instead of CesiumJS ( https://cesiumjs.org/ )? Especially since the latter appears to be free?
