HN discussionI think Kilo is a great little project, well-structured and very educational. Another useful resource I've relied upon in the past, dates back to the 1990s: Freyja, which is Craig Finseth's emacs-like editor written in C. Here is a list of features: * deletions are automatically saved into a "kill buffer" * ability to edit up to 11 files at once * ability to view two independent windows at once * integrated help fac…

HN discussionThere is no substitute to building one yourself, but The Craft of Text Editing book has a lot of accumulated wisdom. It is Emacs-centric, but basics are same. http://www.finseth.com/craft/

HN discussionI've always enjoyed Finseth's Thesis on text editing, "A cookbook for an EMACS", which he turned into a book: https://www.finseth.com/craft/ and is available in epub form for free.

HN discussionWhen I was implementing a toy editor I read the neovim source code and to no one’s surprise the modes are just long switch statements - when in mode M and input key is K, do some action. It’s a simple program and your mental model is probably close to the vim source code! For learning a lot of cool stuff about implementing my best book is The Craft Of Text Editing http://www.finseth.com/craft/

on “A Brief Glance at How Various Text Editors Manage Their Textual Data (2015)”if you don't have reflinks (or some non-linux equivalent) you're going to have to load the entire file into an array when you open it anyway, even if that array isn't where you edit it the performance cost of a dumb array is being oversold here. it's true that insertion and deletion are slow in arrays, but let's put this in perspective. i'm displaying my editor on a 2-megapixel display, which is 8 megabytes of pixel…
