HN discussionYou can actually use Gooey for any arbitrary program or language (if you don't mind configuring a few of your cli arguments in python). Gooey technically just uses Json behind the scenes, but Python remains the most first class way to generate that blob of json. I wrote a brief guide awhile ago here[0]. For instance, all the screen shots and screen recordings throughout the README are done with a custom wrapper I ma…

HN discussionHearing that other people struggled with this problem gives me solidarity. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to get "click and drag thing" working in isometric [0]. Rendering differently sized sprites was a whole other thing. Figuring it out without google was immensely satisfying, though. Reminded me what I love about programming. HN discussionCount me in the long line of suckers :( Probably one of the largest technical blunders of my career (or at least the largest so far! ) was pulling a team down into ES hell on a greenfield project. Turns out, growing an event sourced application is fantastically hard[0]. Ours eventually became a twisted opaque mess which was terrifying to modify due to (a) the sheer volume of code it took to do so, and (b) eventually…

HN discussionIt means going from: Frontend > React > [state management library of choice] to Frontend > Data Layer > View Layer (React) This is MVC, no? That's basically the diagram for MVC on the Wikipedia page. I suppose giving it a "-first" (god I hate this trend) moniker spiffs it up a bit. We could also name it "modern MVC" for ultimate internet points. I'd also read this article (not mine): https://chriskiehl.com/article/r…

HN discussionSure, I was talking about the workaround mentioned here: > You can also invoke any arbitrary executable [ https://chriskiehl.com/article/gooey-as-a-universal-frontend ], not just python, which is pretty handy. Rhetorics aside, you can use Gooey for any CLI tool using a small Python glue (pardon the pun) code, so it was not a flat out lie.

HN discussionHey, what the -- this is my thing. ^_^ What's it doing at the top of HN? A quick reply to some of the comments about argparse. Gooey is super old at this point. Argparse was a solid choice at the time when Gooey started. These days, Gooey itself speaks in JSON and is decoupled from argparse itself. However, argparse remains the main "blessed" interface (mostly because nobody else has built a different one). Some fun…

HN discussionEvent sourcing is a pattern (antipatern?) that appears useful because it solves an interpersonal problem. It is the kind of thing that middle management salivates over because it appears to decentralize control, which to such a manager sounds like "gives me more control of my own sphere". Every team creates their own event schemas and subscribes to other teams' events and we all live happily ever after. Never again…
