What Hacker News says?
Long back when this started, OpenDNS was the largest public DNS provider. And I know at one point they started "hijacking" google requests - you can read this here : http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21284386-Google-Com-Hijacke... . This was in 2008. They used to also hijack DNS requests to show their own ads. And i am pretty sure many ISPs always played around with DNS in this way. In 2009, Google launched its own P…

HN discussionI think you are right. Reminds me of the story behind "Google Public DNS". Back in 2008/2009, OpenDNS was hijacking "queries" (NXDOMAIN) typed in the address bar to their own search page ("OpenDNS Guide", or some such) on an opendns.com subdomain. In response, Google launched its own open resolver.^1 (OpenDNS was later acquired by Cisco) 1. http://umbrella.cisco.com/blog/opendns-google-dns

HN discussion"The DNS was co-opted in this effort and OpenDNS tried to achieve this with a recursive resolver that performed NXDOMAIN redirection into a search engine, in a reprise of Sitefinder. For a short period, OpenDNS also redirected the domain name www.google.com to a different search engine." Well this is false, and misleading. The connection to Sidefinder is a red herring -- sitefinder was applied Internet-wide, OpenDNS…

HN discussionThis is a breakdown of some issues many people have with Google's Privacy Policy for their DNS. Temporarily Logs (2 days): - Google logs the IP address of every device sending a DNS query. - For DNS-over-HTTPS, logs Content-Type & Accept HTTP headers Permanently Logs: - Client's autonomous system number - User's geolocation within 1 km^2 and 1000 people. - Timestamp - Requested Domain Name - Request Domain type - Tr…

HN discussionAdvertising-supported nerds using the media to attack each other. The person making this coment about "BS jobs" is the one who started EasyDNS and OpenDNS and tried to compete with the pre-Chrome "Google toolbar" and later Chrome and eventually the "omnibox" for the privilege of injecting ads into the "user experience", and/or collecting data to support ad services. Google, with its control over being "default searc…

HN discussion>What makes the no-ip.org case extraordinary is that Microsoft a) persuaded the court that the domain was being used for malware, and then b) persuaded the court that because of this, rather than doing something normal like compelling its operator to take down the afflicted subdomains, or failing that compelling a third party to suspend the domain, that they should be allowed to take over DNS service for the domain.…
