What Hacker News says?

  1. > important the point still is that Android should totally switch to openjdk, end of story Not "end of story" at all - why should Android switch? You mentioned ZGC & Shenandoah, but why do you think that would be a benefit? Have you actually tried benchmarking your app in ART vs. OpenJDK? Do you have any clue at all if ZGC would even be an improvement in your workloads, or the workloads of a typical Android app for…

  3. They've been working on it for quite a while, yeah :) I appreciate it and they've made quite a lot of progress... but it's still nowhere near Go, and I mostly doubt it ever will be. # time ./hellogo hello world real 0m0.005s user 0m0.001s sys 0m0.005s It's probably "good enough" for many cases nowadays tho, yes, e.g.: https://cl4es.github.io/2019/11/20/OpenJDK-Startup-Update.ht...

  5. No, just lots of different things. G1 has had ~700 improvements since JDK 8 and is now very different: https://archive.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/event/g1/ ZGC, the low-latency collector (which gives a ~1-2ms max pause times on heaps of up to 16TB in JDK 16) was introduced in 11 and made production-ready in 15. In general, the way the GCs work is just very different from 8. Plus, there have been lots of improvements t…

  7. > HotSpot, under a typical configuration, eats up about 250MB just sitting there doing nothing. This is much lower in newer jdk's [0]. > For a slightly more apples-to-apples comparison that's also quite a bit more apples-to-jicama, if I open vscode and IDEA on the same project (a small one I'm just getting started on), vscode and all its helpers are using 316MB, and IDEA is using 1.08GB I believe this to just be int…

  9. The funny thing is HotSpots startup time and memory usage are drastically lower on jdk 14 vs 8 [0]. I think the next step for Java will be more people shifting to using ZGC which automatically releases unused heap back to the OS where the current default (G1) doesn't. 13. Modern JVMs don't take that long to start. While not at raw binary levels they shouldn't be killing your focus as theyre on par with scripting languages. https://cl4es.github.io/2019/11/20/OpenJDK-Startup-Update.ht... .

  14. I think the overhead of GC is negligible for many small programs. Claes Redestad @ Oracle gives a good overview here. https://cl4es.github.io/2019/11/20/OpenJDK-Startup-Update.ht... I would look into GraalVM native images if you want fast startup.

  15. The main differences are probably the compilers involved, which tend to be layered based on how often a routine gets called (starting interpreted, then using a fast-but-dumb JIT compiler, then a slow-but-smart JIT compiler). There are many JVMs, each operating slightly differently, but the HotSpot JIT seems to be the most widely used (e.g. https://cl4es.github.io/2019/11/20/OpenJDK-Startup-Update.ht... ) Node runs o…

  16. > I had really high hopes for the Java AOT stuff but it seemed to stall (maybe I missed something). Project Leyden [1] aims to standardise AOT for the Java Platform. It is planned to start sometime in the new year. We will most likely end up with two implementations of it. One is GraalVM's native image which will most likely need to make some changes in order to follow the specification. And another implementation w…
