What Hacker News says?

  1. CDNs are essentially identical (technologically and economically) to what Netflix bought from Comcast: http://clipperhouse.com/2014/05/07/what-netflix-bought-from-... To my mind, I can’t imagine a rule that describes a fast lane that doesn’t also describe a CDN.

  5. Here’s the problem: what AT&T is doing does not violate any technical definition of net neutrality, unless we ad hoc append new parts to it. This is the core problem of net neutrality arguments, which it is often defined as ‘I know it when I see it’. It amounts to principles, but if we are going to have an enforceable law, we need to do better than that. AT&T is not offering any priority to any bits here. Nothing is…

  7. Here’s a way to write tests next to the code: https://clipperhouse.com/go-test-csharp/ (Whether I recommend it, not sure! I did it and then undid it, with suspicion that tests were taking longer due to, perhaps, worse caching of build artifacts.)

  11. Correct, these are semantically different. You’ve described it well. The ORM would be incorrect if it did not generate the SQL that it did. Part of the issue is confusing object data with metadata. The id is an implementation detail of the data store – metadata. What the user is trying to do here is “talk database” and “talk model” at the same time. Which is a perfectly good argument against an ORM. But one should c…

  13. They are foreseeable. This sort of regulation ensures that only big players (incumbents) will play, because it tilts advantage to those with better lobbyists. http://clipperhouse.com/2010/02/22/net-neutrality-and-preser...

  17. Comcast is supporting having their competitors being bound by net neutrality. Comcast already is, due to the terms of the NBC merger. So they want their competitors to “suffer” similarly. And they don’t want mobile to impinge on the fixed-line market, so they support NN in mobile, too. A good analogy is WalMart supporting a minimum wage. They support it because it hurts their competitors (local Mom & Pops) more. [1]…

  19. Increased regulation means that would-be network providers need lawyers and lobbyists to compete. I can't get FIOS on my block in Manhattan even though I can see Verizon HQ from my window. I'd like to give them my money and they'd like to take it, but they haven't gotten over the regulatory hurdles to run a fiber. I am sure a small guy would love to do the same but there's no way they can get over those hurdles, if…
