  1. Yeah I've gotten a little wrapped up as well looking into all of this mounting tension between the US and Russia. Protip, stay away from /r/the_donald. My personal opinion is that it is mostly political and I think (hope) that what is happening in Syria won't escalate to direct conflict between the US and Russia. I stumbled across this little blog article the other day and it helped relieve some of my anxieties. htt…

  3. > A "no deal" outcome, which is clearly bad, is still the best thing brexiters can actually deliver. It could go much much worse than just "bad". The UK imports a lot of food from EU neighbors. In case of a hard Brexit, this will just ... stop. The question is whether all supermarkets can immediately redo their supply chains. That is not likely. Especially since the UK will loose all trade agreements with the non-EU…

  6. The point being made is: Technology without vision is dehumanizing. This is widely known and is, for example, the reason good schools make undergrad engineering students take at least a few humanities classes before they leave. Technology without vision is dehumanizing - it happened with Penn Station, where narrow quantitative and engineering goals displaced the broader human ones and led to the widely-hated station…

  13. I'm afraid you're not going to learn toughness in a book but rather through tough experiences. If you want to train it (I think it's something you can acquire more easily at childhood) it's up to you to "design" these experiences as tough enough to harden you but not so tough that you will break. Some silly examples that comes to me : - try fasting (if your medical condition allows it) - get the shitiest job you can…

Preparation and disaster-specific learning can only take you so far, but http://collapse.reddit.com is a serviceable overview of that part. http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.com and http://cluborlov.blogspot.com/ have a more nuanced view of social and economic collapse; 1950s style "nuclear armageddon" style survivalism is unlikely to suffice in the real world. For the last nail in the coffin of "guns and independe…
