Too few sampled comments (1) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers cite this blog on firmware design, including the argument that idle memory matters more than peak memory in typical firmware, and single-threading. It was linked in the Microvium thread.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 1 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
If by "like this" you mean with snapshotting (e.g. if you prefer snapshotting to bundling https://coder-mike.com/blog/2020/05/15/snapshotting-vs-bundl... ), then node doesn't support it because V8 doesn't (yet) support it, but it might be coming! If by "like this" you mean runs on small devices, maybe check out https://www.neonious-iot.com/lowjs/

HN discussion> The entire purpose of Javascript is that it's a "scripting" language, so having an interactive runtime is kind of the point. If your use case is plugging a keyboard into your MCU or connecting a terminal prompt on the UART, then the MCU needs to be running a parser, yes. But there may be many real-world use cases where your "scripts" will be going through some kind of deployment and release process, and adding a s…

HN discussionMicrovium does use a compacting heap, something similar to a semi-space collector except that it can free up the unused "space". Have a look for some of the details: https://coder-mike.com/blog/2020/07/08/new-garbage-collector... But the malloc/free thing referenced in the article is mainly about the stack space and core registers, which would just be wasting space if the VM was idle.

HN discussionThe author has a different perspective on that. From the article: > In typical firmware, idle memory is much more important than peak memory, as I explained in my last post. https://coder-mike.com/blog/2022/05/27/single-threading-is-m...
