HN discussionI think it would be difficult for Stack Overflow to slow down. In the post, Jeff links to one of his previous blog posts that describes the "running as fast as they can" culture that's been instilled in the company: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2010/09/go-that-way-really-... I can see why he'd take some time off and maybe start another venture that would lend itself to a more laid back culture.

HN discussionif there were such an oath, programmers would write the code and the business will fill it with content.. //It should be noted that no ethically-trained software engineer would ever consent to write a DestroyBaghdad procedure. Basic professional ethics would instead require him to write a DestroyCity procedure, to which Baghdad could be given as a parameter. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2007/05/your-favorite-pro…

HN discussionEven after reading Jeff Atwood's post[1], it still amazes me how many programmers fail the fizz buzz test. We dont even get the chance to ask tough programming qustions. Simple questions like fizz buzz, loops and recursion were good enough to filter out a lot of applicants. [1] http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2007/02/why-cant-programmer...

HN discussionMaybe we should come up with an HR equivalent to the "duck"? Story pasted below: This started as a piece of Interplay corporate lore. It was well known that producers (a game industry position, roughly equivalent to PMs) had to make a change to everything that was done. The assumption was that subconsciously they felt that if they didn’t, they weren’t adding value. The artist working on the queen animations for Batt…

HN discussionI think this pretty much sums up why Jeff isn't using php: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2012/06/the-php-singularity... Part of the motivation for this seems to be as a way of supporting Ruby over php for ubiquitous webapps

HN discussionGizmo's point is that if only it were easy for developers to simply drop in an old (battle-hardened, field-tested) crypto system into their code, then we'd see much more of that in the wild, and much less md5 / plaintext. Developers use md5 and plaintext because of laziness. It's not really a conscious choice on their part. They consciously choose to use MySQL vs Oracle, PHP vs .NET, etc, and they spend much more ti…
