Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog's posts on a SQLite virtual table for reading Parquet files, and cite them as an example of SQLite extensions and as evidence for columnar storage performance and size gains.

What Hacker News says?

  1. In my experience [1], the CSV virtual table was really slow. Doing some analysis on a 1,291 MB file, a query took 24.7 seconds using the virtual table vs 3.4 seconds if you imported the file first. The CSV virtual table source code is a good pedagogical tool for teaching how to build a virtual table, though. [1]: https://cldellow.com/2018/06/22/sqlite-parquet-vtable.html

  3. Judging from [1] I think your intuition about performance and particularly storage improvements is correct. 1: https://cldellow.com/2018/06/22/sqlite-parquet-vtable.html

  4. Squashing the SQLite file works pretty well -- it's a bit bigger and slower than Parquet, but maybe a reasonable trade off to not have to deal with Parquet. I added a section at https://cldellow.com/2018/06/22/sqlite-parquet-vtable.html#s... to mention it. Thanks for the inspiration!
