What Hacker News says?

  1. Sad to hear this. This motivated me to dig up some old code, perhaps someone here will appreciate it. Maybe you can find a new rule set to Conway's Game of Life that produces undiscovered patterns. [1] https://hoten.cc/blog/life/ [2] https://connorjclark.github.io/dart-life/#life

  3. I've been working on this sort of game for awhile now. Never too seriously, though that will change in 2023. Hardly worth sharing at this point, but I will anyway. https://hoten.cc/gridia/play/ I need to seriously think about what I want out of this game (more of a mmo game engine), but "UO-like" is definitely top of mind.

  5. A few months ago I spent a week of my vacation reverse engineering Zelda Classic[1], an awesome tool made by Zelda fans which has many awesome custom-made Zelda-like games made in it. I'm a web guy, so that's my medium of choice. I called it Quest Maker[2]. The game repo isn't public (haven't figured out what I want to do with this...), but here's the tool I made for converting the binary quest datafiles to JSON[3].…

  7. That was literally how I first approached this problem of getting Zelda Classic quests to work in the browser. I had initially failed to port it with Emscripten, so I reverse engineered the quest binary format and started painstakingly recreating the engine in JavaScript [1]. I got pretty far but there would have been years and years of tweaks to get it just right, so I gave up. [1] https://hoten.cc/quest-maker/play/

  9. I work on a game engine (see profile) - I added a input recording/replay system that tracks a hash for each graphics frame for regression testing. We have ~17M frames of tests (80 hours of real playtime), and when something fails it generates a custom HTML report[1] where you can navigate the failing frames and some frames before/after for context. It's just graphical, so if the error isn't obvious you must delve in…

  10. Awesome! A feature suggestion, if I may. It's fun to play with the rules of the game itself. Would you consider adding a way to tweak the birth/death rules? For example, "B3/S23" denotes the normal rules of the game (a cell is born if it has 3 live neighbors, and remains alive if it has 2 or 3). You can play with the rules in my version of Life here[1]. 12. Not a clone, but Zelda Classic is a custom game engine with about a thousand fan games created in it. https://hoten.cc/blog/porting-zelda-classic-to-the-web/
