Why HN links it

Linked as a well-written blog by a scientist on crows and corvids, with FAQs on crow behaviour and short commentary on experiments such as the crowbox idea.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 9 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

Whether you’re here with specific questions or a general interest, you’re in the right place to learn the science behind one of the globe’s most charismatic and influential groups of birds. I created this blog in 2012 when I was just starting as a graduate student at the University of Washington as

  7. I'm a huge fan of corvids, but evidence that the crowbox works is dubious [1]. Incidentally if you enjoy reading about crows take a look at the author's other posts on that blog. I know it was said over 2000 years ago, but ravens are quite intelligent. Raking up there with primates and estimated to be similar to a 3-4 year old human. Birds get a bad rap with terms like "bird brained", but it's rarely true, even for those that people consider pests like pigeons[1]. A researcher from the University of Washington has a really great blog on corvids I follow (crows, jays, ravens, rooks, magpies,…

Kaeli Swift (quoted in the article) has a corresponding post on her blog that goes into a little more detail into the experiment: https://corvidresearch.blog/2019/08/26/dumpster-diving-is-gi... Her blog is wonderful, by the way, if you're interested in crows and other corvids. I highly recommend checking it out.

  13. > Bird brains are probably tuned for rapid stick assessment. I don’t think this is true, birds use all sorts of things to make their nests, including improvising with human objects if there are no sticks. Many don’t use sticks at all (e.g. glueing grass and leaves together with mud). Crows and pigeons in particular are probably smart enough to recognize a “good stick” as a valuable structural material based on physi…
