Why HN links it

HN commenters link CppDepend as a C++ code analysis tool for navigating unfamiliar codebases, and cite its blog post on small string optimization. None of the comments judge the writing itself.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I like to use cppdepend to navigate a large and unfamiliar codebase https://www.cppdepend.com . The interactive dependency graph and integration to the editor to jump back and forth in diagrams to actual code and the many logical constructs in the source certainly accelerates getting a quick sense of the layering and a bit of the architecture of the project.

  3. I believe I was primarily using Architexa ( https://github.com/i3labs/architexa ), but it was a number of years ago when I was working exclusively in Java. JetBrains also provides a few diagramming plugins, but I've never used them. I haven't yet come across tooling that does the same for C, C++, or D. This response inspired me to take a look though, and I did find something for Python ( https://stackoverflow.com/qu…

  5. Some kind of treemap [1] might be a better visualization option, 3D visualizations are notoriously hard to navigate. NDepend [2] is a code analysis tool for .NET which, among other things, uses treemaps to visualize code bases. There are also a versions for Java [3] and C++ [4].
