craig-wood.com is a personal blog at craig-wood.com about programming and math. Since 2011, 10 different Hacker News readers have linked it 15 times, most often “Deadlocks in Go: the dark side of concurrency (2021)”. No feed was found, so read it on the site itself.
Too few sampled comments (4) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link Craig Wood's programming and maths write-ups: a tic-tac-toe encoding in 15 bits, a GCHQ puzzle solution, juggling GIF animations, and a Chudnovsky formula for pi digits with an implementation.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
Python uses Karatsuba multiplication for its long integers. This works very well for not too big long integers but when they get huge using the GMPy module is much quicker. If you want to see a practical demo of that when calculating pi see: https://www.craig-wood.com/nick/articles/pi-chudnovsky/

HN discussionIs there an inaccuracy for https://www.craig-wood.com/nick/oxo2d/b2/ ? I believe the optimal response to: X . . . O . . . . Should be X . . . O . . . X Which offers a reasonable opportunity for "O" to mess up by choosing a corner. But instead your script plays X X . . O . . . . Which guides the human player to reflexively counter accurately without thinking.

HN discussionA very long time ago I used the idea that there aren't actually that many possible tic-tac-toe boards to make an HTML player that is just static web pages https://www.craig-wood.com/nick/oxo2d/ I generated this with a C program that tried to minimise the number of boards. There are 427 pages including the index. This has been through quite a few revisions of my website and I lost the source to the C program so it re…

HN discussionI had a go at solving sudokos, but I found the experience tedious, mechanical and far too easy to make a mistake. In fact just the frustration inducing thing to tickle the first of the virtues of a programmer: "Laziness". I then wrote a solver in Python which was far more fun than solving sudokus by hand and has the advantage that I never need to solve one of the dratted puzzles again ;-) I recommend it as an exerci…

HN discussionInteresting reading about the difficulties with arctan. There is a better series for arctan than the Taylor series which converges for all x. You can see it here in the accelerated series section https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctangent_series I wrote about it in my calculating pi blog some time ago https://www.craig-wood.com/nick/articles/pi-machin/ It also takes fewer operations which is nice. I thought it was inv…

HN discussionThere is also this: https://www.craig-wood.com/nick/animations/ If you are interested in more juggling animations. I specifically enjoy this comment: > When making the men juggling men etc animations I made a small mistake which made the smaller men juggle at twice the rate of the larger men. This halves the quality of the smaller men's animation, but I left it because I rather liked the smaller men juggling faster…
