What Hacker News says?

  1. One of the 1Password ones ( https://team-sik.org/sik-2016-040/ ) about leaking URLs is marked as fixed, however, that's a little misleading. It's fixed if you use their newer vault format, which has limitations, and is not selected by default when you create a new vault. I wrote this about it a while back: https://myers.io/2015/10/22/1password-leaks-your-data/

  3. The main reason I use Poetry is for its lockfile support. I've written about why lockfiles are good here: https://myers.io/2019/01/13/what-is-the-purpose-of-a-lock-fi...

  5. I don't think that's a fair criticism of Lastpass for having "security issues" for the following reasons: 1. In the blog post you linked, no user passwords were at risk. They were being abundantly cautious, which makes sense since they hold everyone's passwords. 2. In the talk you linked, this is a inherent problem with storing keys on your local filesystem and not a problem with Lastpass. 1password is also "vulnera…

  7. I felt the same way up until a year ago. I'm in my 40s, been developing for over 20 years professionally and was programming in assembly since the late 80s in middle school and felt the same way. I kind of stumbled into a job as a lead. I was looking for a job, thought I was applying for just another senior developer job and I started asking my version of the Joel Test * to my now manager. I realized after a lot of…

  9. Of all the updates to the Joel test I've read, this is by far the most... Nebulous. Maybe even asinine because even if you were to ask this in an interview, the interviewer could reply to half it these with a bland "yes" and there's really no way to confirm or deny during the interview since it's all based on opinion. In the best scenario, the affirmative answers were straight up lies and then you know immediately t…
