Why HN links it

HN readers link Dan Goldin's posts on Prolog for puzzle-style problems, a Java SimpleDateFormat bug around New Year, and adding email attachments in Django. One commenter calls the date post a perennial favorite.

Currently leading engineering team @ TripleLift (http://triplelift.com/). Formerly I cofounded Makers Alley (http://makersalley.com) and Pressi (formerly Glossi) (http://getpressi.com/dan). Before that I had a stint as a wall street quant, a management consultant, and a brief stint as a product manager. I write at http://dangoldin.com. I do a minimal amount of consulting on work with a focus on quantitative engineering, scaling systems, and architecture review. If you have an interesting projec…

  1. Shameless plug but I did something similar in 2014 and used PhantomJS to analyze the content of the top 1000 Alexa sites: http://dangoldin.com/2014/03/09/examining-the-requests-made-...

  3. I actually converted my blog ( http://dangoldin.com/ ) a while back to be entirely in AMP. In this way I'm using the framework without caring about the CDN element. After reading this I may just bite the bullet and remove AMP and just cut out a bunch of crap to get it optimized for lower bandwidth devices.

  5. Yea - I was inspired by seeing how well AMP worked on some sites and actually converted my entire blog to use AMP for every page. It's incredibly fast and I'm happy with it although I'm sure I could have achieved most of the results with some highly optimized CSS and HTML: http://dangoldin.com/

  7. A bit of a plug but I wrote about this a week or so ago describing SQL as the perfect interface. Databases change and evolve but since they all wrap the underlying engine in SQL it becomes very easy to use new technologies under the same interface: http://dangoldin.com/2017/04/11/sql-is-the-perfect-interface...

  11. Same here. My bear case for Uber is just that self driving will commoditize the market and turn a two sided market into a one sided market. At that point it will be the cheapest offering that wins. Wrote about it in more detail here: http://dangoldin.com/2016/05/28/uber-and-self-driving-cars/

  13. Earlier this year I spent some time moving my blog to AMP and so far I'm pretty happy with the move. It's hosted on GitHub pages and I made the decision to go full AMP (including Desktop so I never went the /amp/ subfolder route) and allowed me to convert every existing page to AMP without having to have a new set of URLs. It's noticeably faster but there are a few hiccups I had to deal with - JS needs to be in isol…

  15. Pretty cool. I also did a stint messing around with Prolog and it was pretty awesome discovering an entirely new programming paradigm. I ended up doing the Priceonomics puzzle ( https://priceonomics.com/jobs/puzzle/ ) in Prolog and wrote up about it here - http://dangoldin.com/2013/06/07/fun-with-prolog-priceonomics...

  17. I took a quick look at tech companies that went public in the 80s up to today (1) and it's not as simple as Scott makes it out to be. The annualized returns are comparable now to what they were in the "glory days" due to companies like Tesla and Netflix but the massive long term returns are going to be harder/impossible to achieve. Sure we may not have the chance for another Microsoft going public but there's still…

SEEKING WORK - Remote or NYC Background is in the data science side of things but I've been developing web products for the past two years - namely my two startups: http://getpressi.com/dan and https://makersalley.com/ They're taking a bit longer to pay the bills than I'd hoped (welcome to startups) so I'm looking to pick up a 10-20 hours a week of consulting work. 23. SEEKING WORK - Remote or NYC. Willing to travel. I'm looking for something around 1-3 days/week since my startup's taking longer to generate revenue than I thought (such is the life). My background is in quantitative development but for the past 18 months I've been developing pretty much full stack using Python/R/Django/Flask/jQuery/MySQL/MongoDB/AWS to build Pressi ( http://getpressi.com/dan ) and Makers Alley ( ht…

  25. Two years ago I was wondering why there was such a glut of these cleaning startups. The entire idea of applying the Uber model just didn't make sense - one is a commodity product with no way to bypass the middleman while the other requires letting someone into your home and encourages going off platform. Dug up the old post for those interested - http://dangoldin.com/2013/12/09/why-are-there-so-many-cleani...

  29. There's an AMP workaround I found a few years ago that surprisingly still works. Basically open up the article as an AMP page and then disable the HTTP request to the access module. More context here: http://dangoldin.com/2017/04/16/amp-and-subscription-paywall...
