What Hacker News says?

  1. Causality could go the other way. Consider a rational reaction to being just at the edge of the welfare cliff. If you haven't heard of that, look at the graphs in these two articles: https://danieljmitchell.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/a-picture-o... https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-08-30/when-work-punished... It's a better deal to earn $29,000 than $69,000 due to the loss of benefits. That means people don't strive…

  3. This is a funny accusation considering that the U.S.’s advantage over other countries has only grown over the last decade: https://danieljmitchell.wordpress.com/2022/02/05/comparing-e... Germany’s per-capita GDP was 76% of the U.S. in 2015 and is 61% today.

  7. Why do you say it failed miserably? Compared to what? Why do you think the conditions of that time were a result of legislation being insufficient as opposed to quality of life simply being lower in that period of time? By the same logic I can say that not having minimum wage in the 12th century was the reason why people were suffering. It's entirely true there wasn't a minimum wage at that time either, but it compl…

  9. 1984: Government's Attempt to Control The Mind and Bodies of Its Citizens The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell is an American classic which explores the human mind when it comes to power, corruption, control, and the ultimate utopian society. Orwell indirectly proposes that power given to the government will ultimately become corrupt and they will attempt to force all to conform to their one set standard.…

  10. You would in fact prune some of the branches from the capital apple tree if that tree was strangling the people harvesting it[0] or poisoning the water supply[1]. Who are YOU to tell ME what I "need"? If you want to "collectively decide" how to "better use" MY money, I can just move it to a different jurisdiction and you'll get what you deserve - nothing. If the value of what your "collective decision" gives me for "60% tax bill" is not there, the money will rightfully leave. There is a great parable explaining how this works: http://danieljmitchell.wordpress.com/2012/03/18/t…
