What Hacker News says?

  1. I wrote an article on the topic back then: http://danieltenner.com/posts/0012-google-wave.html "What problems does Google Wave solve?" Wave solved many problems. Google are idiots to axe it after barely a year and a half.

  5. Most of our hires are not developers. We're not building cutting edge tech. We have some internal tools but I don't believe they require "top developers" by whatever metrics Facebook might use. That said, I think the few developers we have are exceptionally good - versatile, multi-skilled, quick learners, broad experience, the ability to conceive, manage and run a whole software project without very little help... a…

  7. Have a look at the companies listed halfway down the page on http://danieltenner.com/open-cultures/ . Not all qualify as purposeful orgs, but quite a few do. Reinventing Organisations, mentioned on this page too, is a book that studies a dozen examples of purposeful, open culture organisations, if you're interested in learning more about this.

  9. This is a fantastic side-effect of transparent cultures and salary structure: people like you who, for reasons good or bad, do not want to work in this kind of environment, don't apply. You may believe that sets you apart as an "A player" and means we only hire B players. I believe the concept of A players and B players is false, and have discussed this here: http://danieltenner.com/2014/09/11/there-are-no-b-players…

  11. We're really trying to nail a good way to deal with salary negotiations when onboarding people, at GrantTree - one that gets out of this "gotcha" approach to salary. So far the best we've figured out is to be the first ones to name a number, and be super-transparent about how we arrived at that number. The reasoning is that "in a salary negotiation the first person to quote a number loses", so since we (as the emplo…

  13. To me, this seems mostly a very justified criticism of many startup advice articles, and the reason why I wrote https://danieltenner.com/2017/03/16/how-to-write-good-startu... a good long while ago...

  17. FYI, for the last 6 months I've cut out major sources of carbs. No rice, pasta, bread or potatoes, and no obviously super-sweet stuff (sugar, sodas, etc), and very sweet fruits (apples, cherries, pineapples, grapes...) only in moderation. I still drink beer. I make occasional exceptions (been eating some chocolate every couple of days recently since someone gifted me a whole damn box). I eat lots of veg (salads, spi…

  19. I've made a timeline with the video of the original world-shattering announcement and demo of Wave at Google IO, and some of the Google Wave related submissions to HN. How pretentious and audacious it seems in retrospect! It’s hard to appreciate all the snarky jokes in the Pissed Off Wave Tutorial, if you don’t remember how, um, over-confident they were when they announced Wave. Google Wave Developer Preview at Goog…

  21. Totally agree. This post by daniel tanner http://danieltenner.com/posts/0017-how-to-nap.html should be a practical complement to this.

  23. This is exactly what I use for http://danieltenner.com (well, almost - I use Webby, not Jekyll). In fact, I've made the source code for that available here, if anyone's interested: http://github.com/swombat/danieltenner.com Deploying like this has another advantage: you can deploy to a subdirectory of an existing app. The benefit of that is simple: pagerank transfers better from mysite.com/blog to mysite.com (since…

  25. Brilliant. I love the fact that it doesn't really change the look of my blog very much ( http://www.danieltenner.com - once you're inside an article, applying readability with medium margins, newspaper look, large font, only gets rid of the red background and the image, that's all)

  27. Not sure why you're being downvoted. I am running one of those companies. Calling it structureless is as misleading as calling agile chaotic. The "Green" stage can feel a little like the tyranny this article describes, but the "Teal" stage is anything but. It's comparatively light on arbitrary rules compared to your traditional top down company, but it's certainly not unstructured. I have written a numbe of articles…
