What Hacker News says?

  1. > lack of robust python support There is no such thing. Tell me, which combination of the 15+ virtual environments, dependency management and Python version managers would you use? And how would you prevent "project collision" (where one Python project bumps into another one and one just stops working)? Example: SSL library differences across projects is a notorious culprit. Python is garbage and I don't understand…

  7. There’s already an article on this you can find here: https://dashbit.co/blog/a-new-authentication-solution-for-ph... The GitHub for the generator is here: https://github.com/aaronrenner/phx_gen_auth Basically if you need something different it might be worth forking the generator. I might look at passwordless login at some point.

  9. > Most of what you get from elixir in terms of redundancy, high availability, etc you can have that anyway from kubernetes, heroku or any PaaS.... you will need more than 1 server anyway, so... For what is worth, that's one of the reasons why Elixir exists in the first place. I find the Erlang VM a fantastic platform and there is no reason to restrict it to high availability/distributed scenarios. Elixir developers…

  11. I'm at a relatively early stage VC-backed startup and from day 1 it's been written in Elixir. It was a fantastic choice, for many reasons, with some being: - Elixir is good for just getting stuff done. I came from a previous startup that used Go and Elm. - The community isn't as small as people make it out to be, or, it's quality over quantity. ;) - There's a lot of good modules out there, and if you need to write y…

  15. Do you know what other ecosystem comes closest to the existing in Python? I've heard good things about Julia. 13 years ago when I was trying to explore the field R seemed to be the most popular, but looks like not anymore. (I didn't get into the field, and do just a regular SWE, so I'm not aware of the trends). There is also a lot of development in Elixir ecosystem around the subject [1]. [1]( https://dashbit.co/blo…

  23. Hi everyone, co-creator of Nx here! I have just published an article on Dashbit's blog with a bit more context on Nx and the design decisions behind it: https://dashbit.co/blog/nx-numerical-elixir-is-now-publicly-... It is hopefully a more in-depth reference than the README. If you have any questions, I will be glad to answer them!

  25. Excellent read! This is the first time I feel like I finally have a good handle on the "what" & "why" of RSCs. It has also sparked a strong desire to see RSCs compared and contrasted with Phoenix LiveView. The distinction between RSCs sending "JSX" over the Wire, and LiveViews sending "minimal HTML diffs"[0] over the wire is fascinating to me, and I'm really curious how the two methodologies compare/contrast in prac…

  29. While Elixir is my current favorite language to hack in, it is very alien and downright hostile to integrating with existing systems. For example, relational database support was postgres focused for a long time (to the exclusion even of SQLite and continued inability to talk to Oracle). Then you have articles like https://dashbit.co/blog/you-may-not-need-redis-with-elixir pushing ETS over Redis. While it's a valid…
