What Hacker News says?
Remember in the lower 48 it’s physically impossible to be further than 100 miles from a McDonalds. I’ve always figured that virtually always includes a gas station, parts store, etc. http://www.datapointed.net/2009/09/distance-to-nearest-mcdon...

HN discussionI'm reminded of xkcd's color survey map[1] and fun visualizations[2]. And a similar paper[3] with an interactive[4]. Note the variation between linguistic groups, and high variance among individuals. Might be interesting to compare the results of TFA. There's also work on using google image search to learn color from names.[5] I was sketching a kids app for "use phone camera to name and collect colors". [1] map http…

HN discussionFun fact illustrated by the map on this page map - it's impossible to be more than 115 miles from a McDonalds in the lower 48. [1] Note that is not by road, that is taking a helicopter. I always take that to be proximate to electricity, a gas station, grocery store, parts store, etc. The lower 48 is really developed. http://www.datapointed.net/2009/09/distance-to-nearest-mcdon... HN discussionFor those saying it breaks or ends at 10000. It doesn't if you append infinity like so http://www.datapointed.net/visualizations/math/factorization... I also like how you can enable turbo by pressing the fast-forward button several times...

HN discussionThis looks homegrown. The source code [1] is fairly readable. New dots seem to enter the world in the position of the last dot placed but below them. Position and size seem to follow a simple linear movement between frames. I wonder though, why is this done with canvas instead of SVG. Just to cut down on the number of DOM elements? HN discussionApples to apples, this does not really apply to SF or even most of the Bay Area. Perhaps all of Texas, Arizona or NM. Not here. I hope some smart Alec SF supe does not get any ideas, reading this. The bulb-outs at the intersections [1], the rules-dont-apply-to-us cyclists [2], the abundance of parklets and dedicated Muni lanes are already making driving in SF a hugely cumbersome affair. If it isn't already, with its…
